The unveiled characters are captivating and so is the investigative- thriller storyline. Written Update/Episode List:

• Episode 1 - Bridges, Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary is going through his dead beat job when he lands up a big investigation. Three men and a woman have been arrested for the attempt to ****** a big prime time journalist Sanjeev Mehra, and Hathi Ram is asked to build a case. Meanwhile, for Mehra, this news couldn't have come at a worse time for he struggles with problems at work and a boss who wants to fire him.
• Episode 2 - Lost and Found, Hathi Ram and Ansari use every technique in the book to interrogate the four suspects. Finally they manage to break one of them and his points to a certain 'Master ji' from Chitrakoot. Pressure mounts on Sanjeev Mehra at the work front.
• Episode 3 - A history of violence, Hathi Ram reaches Chitrakoot and meets Tyagi's family and school teacher. He comes to know of the beginning of Tyagi's criminal record, and the people Tyagi worked for.
• Episode 4 - Sleepless in Seelampur, Hathi Ram gets sucked further into the case, but the investigation hits a dead end with the mysterious death of a key suspect. Sanjeev Mehra starts forming a plan to cash in on his renewed popularity.
• Episode 5 - Of fathers and sons, Hathi Ram, suspended from his job, struggles to keep himself away from the case while dealing with rising issues at home. Sanjeev Mehra makes a dubious populist move that does not go well with Sara.

Negative Reviews

• As per series... Chitrakoot... A mafia place... Policeman abuse and ***** about their colleague if he is Muslim... A pro Hindu crowd ****s one Muslim in Train over beef mis-information... Hindu being shown having non veg in temple... Felt absolutely sick after watching this series. Why these guys can't make a normal series without brining communal angle everywhere. They bring these communal angles in all their movies and series and then ask people not to be communal. Bunch of Hypocrites!!!
• The plot was okayish and not something extraordinary, all mystery buildup was ruined in the end , many underutilized characters, and all the subtle attempts to characterize leftist and anti hindu people as victims only as if they have no fault anywhere, so it comes out just biased with no guts to show both side of story where propoganda is hidden.
• There wasn't any outcome in the story. Inspector has a dream to prove himself of any worth in the eyes of his family which was only achieved because he got his son's friend which has nothing to do with the main story which doesn't end in any way and the Inspector didn't achieve anything because of it. At last you will feel why was even the motive of the story, where did it really tried to go.

• What is this is a testament to the courage and authenticity of the new creative India which finds its way through the corruption, oppression, political frustration and cow dung of the country. Its deals with the whole spectrum of the oppressed and minority. The "Katwa" muslim, the momo Shemale, the ever presence ISI and in all this is the only idealistic "HaanthRam". It's honesty which does not shy away from obscenely to make you uncomfortable. Technically it could have been better in terms of editing and camerawork but the acting shadows such flaws.
• Mohit is outstanding to say the least. Such an unused raw talent. the scene where he walks out after suspension and when he his immediate guilt on the use the word "Katwa" are testament to the vast range of emotions he is capable of being true to while acting. The guy playing his kid shows sparks of brilliance as well. Even the woman constable is never out of the frame. The dialogue are crisps, short and well timed. There are so many nuances to story writing like exposition and character development that are so well taken care of. I have been living in the USA for sometime now, and don't get to see Indian series much. But i am glad i saw this. Inspiring to say the least!!

Born into the rustic life of a small village in district Fatehgarh Sahib, Himmatgarh Chhanna, Punjab, he took the task upon his tiny shoulders. 110 Different Location were Used to Shoot Paatal Lok; Reveals Sudip Sharma

After an immense buzz around the storyline and characters of their upcoming cop-investigative thriller series, the makers of Amazon Prime’s Paatal Lok recently released the trailer and everyone is all praise for the intensity it brings to the screen. Sudip Sharma, creator of the show who has written critically-acclaimed films like NH10 and Udta Punjab, to his credit has some inside details to share.

Sudip Sharma, shares, “With the show, we wanted to explore different cultures, perspectives and tales from various regions, as well as the divides. The point is to bring to the audience what they possibly don’t know about, or at least in a manner they haven't seen.”
Telling us more about the background which brings Paatal Lok together and his experiences, Sharma says, “The show is set up in regions of Delhi, UP and Punjab. I've spent a lot of my time in Delhi and Punjab, Bundelkhand and UP, for the research I did for my previous works.”
Why Delhi?

To this, Sharma has the perfect reason why a show like Paatal Lok which brings an investigative thriller to the audience, is based there. “Another reason to set up the plot in Delhi was because it’s the apex of the Indian political scene and where the power centres lie. Also, most media channels operate out of Delhi. Another thing that makes Delhi fascinating is that because of its location it has the feel of a frontier town, bordering to certain lawless parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan”.

Throwing more light on the shooting and process that went into the creation of the show, Sudip says, “We shot at about 110 different locations which was a task! About 70 percent of the show has been shot at actual locations in Delhi, Gurgaon, Rohtak and Chitrakoot, and the rest recreated in Mumbai on sets.”

No brilliance works on the screen without the best research in place and that’s what Sudip tells us about. “We did extensive research to bring to the audience the closest picture to reality. The objective was to keep it as authentic as possible. We researched a lot on the various aspects- from how a cop station looks like to the design aesthetics of a policeman’s house in Delhi.”

It is a police-based crime thriller written by Sudip Sharma and follows a washed out cop in his venture into a twisted case surrounding the attempt of an assassination of a prime time journalist.

One of the main reasons that the creators set up the plot in Delhi was that it’s the apex of the Indian political scene and where the power centers lie. Sudip said that 70% percent of Paatal Lok had been shot at actual locations in Delhi, Gurgaon, and Rohtak.

However, deciding to produce Paatal Lok seems to be a cakewalk for her considering her eye good quality content. In a recent interview, writer Sudip Sharma praised the actress and even revealed how she ended up choosing the script for the upcoming series.

Apart from that, even Varun Dhawan cheered for what looks like an intriguing show, being brought by the actress who now, is one of the successful producers. For the uninitiated, Paatal Lok is a mystery thriller that will lead us to the world of modern-day Indian society and politics and unravel its mysterious side.

As per the reports, Amazon US had initially axed Anushka Sharma's Paatal Lok owing to the Me Too Movement in India considering that Tarun Tejpal was acussed of **** by a colleague in 2013.



Amazon Prime's much awaited series Pataal Lok is all set to premiere on 15th May and the intriguing trailer of the series has left the fans all excited about it's release. A report in mid-day suggests that the series was in the work since past 5 years and it even faced a hurdle in 2018.

According to the reports, the series which is based on former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal's book, The Story of my Assassins follows a similar narrative apart from the fact that it is told from the perspective of a cop. As per the reports, the sources suggest that initially Amazon US had rejected the series owing to the 'Me Too' Movement in India. In 2013, Tarun Tejpal was accused of **** by a colleague and he bas been on bail since July 2014.

However, the source also adds that creator Sudip Sharma and Amazon India had faith in their product and they also reasoned that the book was only the starting point. They had consciously distanced themselves and their offerings from Tejpal and it was a collective decision to develop Neeraj Journalist as a Grey Character, keeping the message of the show in the right place.

Talking to Mid-day, Sharma refused to comment on how Amazon US initially wanted to Axe the show and he said that he wouldn't be in a position to comment on that. He also mentioned that the book was a small part of it and they took a one line plot from there and the writers explored many different situations. He mentioned that there are several other factors that have been added to the story. They decided to explore the life of a cop and it is not based on a real life person. He also mentioned that Neeraj Kabi's role has nothing to do with Tarun, it's a fictional character.

"The author of the book was not involved in the development or production of the show," he added. Talking about the 2018 incident, Amazon Prime's spokesperson said, "Paatal Lok is loosely inspired by an idea from the book. Creator-writer Sudip Sharma took inspiration from it, and with his team of writers, crafted a nuanced and immersive crime thriller. Tarun Tejpal was not involved in any phase of the development and production of the show. It is the story of an honest cop who unravels a deep nexus of crime. The characters are fictional and not based on any real-life personalities or incidents."

Amazon Prime Video’s Paatal Lok starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Abhishek Banerjee, Swastika Mukherjee in lead roles opened to good reviews and the audience has been hailing this crime investigation thriller series.

Actress Anushka Sharma has bankrolled the series and is the executive producer of Paatal Lok. She has found herself in legal trouble after a member of the Lawyers Guild sent her a legal notice over a perceived casteist slur in the show. Viren Sri Gurung, a member of the Lawyers Guild has sent a legal notice to Anushka for a perceived casteist slur on the show, and said that the word is insulting towards the Nepali community.
“There is a clip wherein during an interrogation a lady police officer uses a casteist slur on a Nepali character. There wouldn’t have been any problem had only ‘Nepali’ been used. But the word that follows it is unacceptable. Since Anushka Sharma is one of the producers of the show, we have served her a notice”, Gurung said.

Anushka is yet to respond to the notice and Gurung added that he will take the matter up with Amazon next.

This is not the first time when the series sparked a controversy. Previously, an organisation representing Gorkhas claimed that a scene in Paatal Lok contained a ***ual slur directed at the community and demanded the conversation be muted. The Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh (BhaGoYuP), the youth wing of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh also started an online petition demanding the scene to be muted.

"Nepali is one of the 22 scheduled languages and there are 10.5 million people in India who speak Nepali as the common tongue. The Gorkha community is the largest Nepali speaking community and this is a direct insult to the community," the Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh said.

"We strongly condemn it in toughest terms and seek immediate removal of the scene's subtitles and mute the slur," the petition to be sent to Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said.

A case has been filed against Anushka under the National Security Act for instigating communal disharmony. Nandkishore Gurjar also accuses the makers of maligning Bharatiya Janta Party's image and states that the show tried to portray a terrorism-free image of Pakistan. He also alleged that the show's content is 'anti-national.'
