Default Channels launch new shows to grab attention

As soon as the IPL mania got over on the May 24, it's the Hindi entertainment channels that have taken over everyone by storm, giving television a face-lift.

Two months after Colors broke Star Plus' nine-year dream run at the top spot, Zee TV has pushed Star Plus to the number three spot to overtake it for the first time in 10 years.

Currently Colors tops the list with 258 GRP, Zee TV comes second with 245, Star Plus slips to third with 240 while NDTV Imagine takes the fourth spot with 107 GRP.

Zee's victory also lies in the fact that it launched its most popular shows Chhoti Bahu and Agle Janam Mujhe Bitiya Hi Kijo on the eve of IPL and they managed to sustain their viewership despite the cricket series.

"We did not go out launching our shows in a big way, we believe in letting the viewers speak and that is exactly what happened. We launched Agle Janam Mujhe Bitiya Hi Kijo without any fanfare and it is the most popular show of the channel," said COO and Business Head of Zee TV, Nitin Vaidya.

With flagship shows like Balika Vadhu and Uttaran losing some steam, the new leader Colors has a few new shows up its sleeve as well.

"We have six new shows on Colors like Hanuman and Chhote Miyan 2," said Rajesh Kamat, CEO, Colors.

Sony has also aggressively stepped up its strategy to grab eyeballs with new shows post IPL including Chittor Ki Rani Padmini Ka Johar, Bhaskar Bharti, Ladies Special and of course, Dus Ka Dum – which helped the channel up its ratings in its first season.

Whether Sony's new shows makes an impact on its TRPs will be apparent in the coming week. Meanwhile, all eyes are also on the return of Akshay Kumar and a bevy of beauties on the second season of Khatron Ke Khiladi.

"Khatron Ke Khiladi will be on air as soon as we get advertisers, it's already been shot," said Kamat. Only time will tell if it will be Salman or Akshay who emerges the biggest star on the small screen.
