Default Coronavirus: Here is how you can help defeat the pandemic with your smartphone while

Coronavirus or COVID-19 is currently raging across the planet as it continues to spread at an alarming rate. The problematic part about coronavirus is that it is highly infectious and quite easy to spread. In addition, there is no known cure for the disease at the time of writing. Instead, the only hope that most people have against the disease is to dodge the infection. Scientists and researchers across the planet are working around the clock to crack the mystery behind the virus. Multiple research facilities, labs, and universities are currently studying how the virus behaves and reacts.

However, all that research involves a lot of dead ends, unsuccessful attempts and trial and error. It also requires an insurmountable amount of data and computing power. While most researchers have access to high power supercomputers, things seem to be progressing quite slowly. To combat this, a number of interesting groups and projects have stepped up to fill the gap in their own way. We have already talked about Folding@home or FAH, a “distributed computing project” in a dedicated report. FAH allows casual users to contribute their computing power to researchers. The project “brings together citizen scientists who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics on their personal computers”.

FAH is currently working to fight a cure for COVID-19. In addition, a number of hardware maters have also teamed up with FAH and other research facilities to donate hardware for research. Talking about FAH, we have already shared a detailed step on how to get started. Now, according to a new report, a new smartphone app has surfaced that does a similar thing but for smartphones. Taking a closer look, telecommunications giant Vodafone has teamed up with Imperial College in London to create the “DreamLab” app.

DreamLab: A app that can help smartphone users contribute in the fight against coronavirus

Similar to FAH, DreamLab allows users to contribute to the computing power of their smartphone to aid coronavirus-related research. DreamLabs has tamed up with multiple research facilities and universities to help in multiple projects. However, COVID-19 research is the latest project that the app has added on their “Projects” page. Users can select the project that they want to support. As noted while writing about FAH, smartphone processors are considerably less powerful. These devices also don’t feature as efficient cooling solutions as found on proper computers.

The power and cooling limitations make it almost impossible to run complicated calculations on smartphones. However, considering the number of smartphones out there, Vodafone thinks that it can nibble through the required computing power. In addition, to combat these issues, it has also added a unique approach to the app. Taking a closer look, the app only works at night when the user has plugged their device for charging. Let’s check of the details steps on how to get started

Here is how to use your smartphone to fight coronavirus:

Step 1: First up, head to Google Play Store or Apple App Store to download DreamLab on your smartphone. Tap on the “Download” or “Get” ****on to initiate the start the download.

Step 2: Open the app after you have installed in on your smartphone. Now, tap on the “Projects” tab in the bottom and scroll towards the end of the list. Here select the “Corona-AI (Phase 1) to step up the app. It is worth noting that currently, the project is only 0.09 percent done. This project will help researchers to Imperial College to create a drug and food molecule for anti-coronavirus therapy.

Step 3: Now, you can head to the “Settings” app to select preferences regarding the app interface and data usage. In addition, you also need to remove automatic battery optimization for the app on Android devices. This will ensure that the system does not auto-close the app at night. You can also search the internet for instructions regarding your specific smartphone model. It is also interesting to note that the app comes with a system temperature monitor. DreamLab will stop the calculations when it detects that the smartphone is heating beyond a certain temperature. Beyond this, you are now set to fight coronavirus with the help of your smartphone.
