The announcement comes after the expansion of Disney+ to markets like India and eight other Western European countries. Disney+ Hotstar became officially available to Indian customers from April 3. To recall, Disney+ confirmed that it had amassed 26.5 million subscribers during the first quarter of 2020 in February.

As of February 14, 2020, Disney+ was estimated to have 28.6 million paid subscribers. The new numbers indicate that Disney+ added 21.4 million subscribers in just over two months. Disney+ first became available in the markets like the US, Australia and Canada. It has since expanded to more markets like India, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland. Disney+ Hotstar is growing in India

“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” said Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International. “Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+.”

According to The Streamable, 20 percent of Disney+’s 26.5 million initial subscribers came as a result of the partnership with Verizon. The service saw 50 percent of the users coming directly via Disney+ website. The rest came through partnerships with companies like Apple and Roku. Disney+ is still a considerably smaller streaming service when compared to other streaming video-on-demand platforms.
