Huawei could partner with Samsung, MediaTek to mass produce 5G chipsets
With growing tensions between Huawei and the US, the Chinese technology giant has been looking for new partners to reduce dependency on the west. The company already took a hit in sales outside home-country China since the band that deprived its phones of Google Apps and Services. As a result, Huawei will be likely looking to move away from Qualcomm later this year. Although Huawei uses its own chipsets in its phones, acting as a direct competitor to Qualcomm, the companies planned to cooperate on 5G development.
However, now since the companies may not work together anymore, Huawei might look towards the only two other major chipset manufacturers. These are Samsung and Mediatek. Samsung has been making its Exynos chipsets for a while now and already has made the Exynos 990 5G SoC. Meanwhile, MediaTek also recently launched the Dimensity 1000 5G-enabled chipset. The other three are Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung. The Chinese company also manufactures and ships its own 5G chipsets in the form of the HiSilicon Kirin 5G range. These are produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, the 5G market which has just started to bloom in terms of smartphones has not taken a hit. Qualcomm’s Vice President, Hou Mingjuan, even stated that the 5G market is relatively unaffected by the pandemic. He added that the market should still see a high demand and growth rate this year. OEMs like Huawei would still need a large number of 5G chipsets to power its next-gen smartphones. Moreover, the technology will soon not be limited to just flagship and upper mid-range devices.
