The Indian society as is common knowledge is largely male dominated. Apart from a few urban pockets, rural India still goes by what the man in the family says. Television shows are supposed to depict what goes on in our society, and it has been doing so too. However, delve a bit deeper and you will find a very interesting pattern. Indian television has produced more famous mothers and mothers-in-law than fathers or fathers-in-law. A Tulsi Virani or Parvati Agarwal is far more famous than the fathers-in-law they had. Ditto for a Baa or the ubiquitous Dadi in any serial. She has far more impact than the Dadajis in Indian television.

Master Haveliram, Buniyaad: One of the most powerful characters portrayed on Indian television till date, Master Haveliram was a man who wanted to live life safely and happily. However, his political interests and the 1947 partition changed it all. He got lost in the riots and his family was separated from him and started living in a refugee camp. Needless to say, he returned and had a happy reunion with his family. Portrayed by Aloknath, this character became such an iconic one that even today two decades down the line people remember him. Basesar Ram, Hum Log: The father of all serials, Hum Log was the first true soap opera on Indian television. And Basesar Ram, the first father figure. Played by Vinod Nagpal, he was a father who was different from the good fathers we were used to seeing on screen. He used to drink daily and as a result always run out of money. He probably did not do a lot of things that was expected from a normal father, and did have grey shades, but there was no doubting the love for his family. That is what kept up his popularity despite so many wrong things he did. High on emotions and sentiments, Basesar Ram did keep all of us glued to our television sets in the Eighties and Vinod Nagpal is still remembered more for Hum Log than anything else.

Mihir Virani, Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi: This was one of the first characters on Indian television that attained equal popularity as a son, husband, father and then grandfather. Courtesy the eight-year-long run and multiple leaps of the Balaji tearjerker, the audience was able to see Mihir (portrayed by Amar Upadhyay, Indra Kumar and then Ronit Roy) in all these roles. Mihir’s death saw a mass hysteria and public demand forced Ekta Kapoor to bring him back to the serial. Despite his not-so-strong character he did become a darling of viewers ranging from eight to 80. Despite being overshadowed by Tulsi Virani and a script tilting towards her, Mihir attained to retain his space largely due to the strong portrayal of the character by Ronit Roy.

Aditya, Aap Ki Antara: The character of Aditya is completely different from the others in this list. The only similarity, perhaps, being the extra marital affair he had out of which an autistic child Antara was born. Played by Darshan Pandya, Aditya is a metro***ual man of today’s urban life. He takes care of his children, helps his wife in household chores, has a good job and also desperately tries to strike the right balance in the family. A fantastic script, unique concept, and powerful portrayal of the character has made Aditya one of the most loved fathers on Indian television in the recent past. In the coming days, his popularity is only expected to skyrocket with the show scaling new TRP heights every week.
