1. Amitabh Bachchan

In the year 2000, Bachchan stepped up to host India's adaptation of the British television game-show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? entitled, Kaun Banega Crorepati. As it did in most other countries where it was adopted, the program found immediate and profound success, in no small part due to Bachchan's charisma. It is believed that Bachchan charged a whopping Rs 25 lakhs (2.5 million Indian Rupees, approximately US$60,000 ) per weekly episode which strengthened Bachchan and his family both financially and morally after the setbacks that he had to cope after ABCL's collapse. The Canara Bank also withdrew its law suit against Bachchan in November 2000. Bachchan hosted KBC till November 2005, and its success set the stage for his return to film popularity. More on

2. Shah Rukh Khan

In 2007, Khan replaced Amitabh Bachchan as the host of the third series of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The previous had hosted the show for five years from 2000-05. On January 22, 2007, Kaun Banega Crorepati aired with Khan as the new host and later ended on April 19, 2007. On April 25, 2008, Khan began hosting the game show Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?, the Indian version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, whose last episode was telecasted on July 27, 2008, with Lalu Prasad Yadav as the special guest.


Shah Rukh Khan, who was satisfied with Rs 75 lakh for each episode of KBC's third season, is charging for Rs 1 crore for an episode of Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hain.

3. Shaan (Shantanu Mukherjee)



He hosted the television show,
Zee TV - Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Shaan is now the host of another very popular music show called STAR Voice of India (SVOI) which airs on Star Plus. He was offered to host Star Voice Of India Chote Ustaad, but opted out to spend time with his family. However, he said he would return to host the next season of SVOI. Singer Shaan made Rs 1.5 lakh to anchor an episode of Zee's SaReGaMaPa. He quit and moved to host a similar show on Star Plus for Rs 2.5 lakh an episode.

6. Salman Khan (Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan)

In 2008 Khan made his debut on the small screen with the game show, Dus Ka Dum based on the international show The Power of 10. The show was aired on Sony. It is the production of Siddhartha Basu and Synergy Labs, the makers of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ and ‘Paanchvi Paas Se Tez. Salman Khan was seen bonding very closely with the participants. Unlike other shows like KBC and Paanchvi Paas Se Tez, Dus ka Dum is not a quiz. Salman Khan gets Rs 80 lakh for each show of 10 Ka Dum. (G****vine has it that he wanted exactly what Shah Rukh got for KBC.)

Everyone is talking of Akshay Kumar as the new king of Bollywood after the success of the numerologically-spelt Singh is Kinng. But he may have claimed that throne even earlier. The actor made Rs 1.5 crore for anchoring each episode of Khatron Ke Khiladi, the reality show based on the international hit Fear Factor. That is thrice what Amitabh Bachchan, who Kumar regards as the only king of Bollywood, earned for an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati's first season, the game show that turned around the fortunes of Star Plus eight years ago.
According to industry estimates, Kumar's show cost Colors Rs 2.5 crores an episode. The show had 16 episodes and was shot in South Africa with models and television stars doing some hard-to-digest stunts.

8. Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty, who achieved only moderate success in Bollywood but hit the big time by winning Big Brother in the UK, is earning Rs 80 lakh for anchoring each episode of Big Brother's Indian sibling, Bigg Boss, on Colors. Started August 17, 2008, Shetty is hosting the second season of Bigg Boss, the Indian version of Big Brother. Controversially, Jade Goody was one of the initial housemates. Goody left the Bigg Boss House early in the series after receiving news that she had cervical cancer.

Mini Mathur is best known an VJ in FTV & MTV. Her six-year experience anchoring countdown shows, game shows, travel and lifestyle programs had conditioned her to handle the gamut of emotions she had to deal with as presenter of Indian Idol. Though a well-known name with classes, Indian Idol made her a familiar name among masses. As the friendly and warm host of the show, Mini won many hearts. With her witty, charming & caring attitude towards the young participants in Indian Idol, When Sony launched music talent show Indian Idol in 2005, it is said to have paid model Mini Mathur Rs 40,000-50,000 each episode.
