Default Chhath Puja Songs: Best Bhojpuri Devotional Bhajans By Sharda Sinha And Anuradha

Chhath Puja: Best Bhojpuri Devotional Songs by Sharda Sinha

The pious and popular Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. The Chhath Puja is a festival that is dedicated to the Sun God and his wife Usha and is celebrated in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on Earth and appease them to grant wishes. Chhath Puja is one of the oldest festivals still celebrated in India and is believed to predate even the ancient Vedas texts, as the Rigveda contains hymns worshiping the Sun God and describes similar rituals. Draupadi is also believed to have performed Chhath Puja in the Mahabharata. Chhath Puja is performed on the sixth day of the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar, the Vikram Samvat. This typically coincides with October or November in the Gregorian English calendar. This year the festival will be celebrated on October 26th and October 27th, 2017. Sun God and his wife Usha (also known as Chhathi Maiya) are worshipped during Chhath Puja. The word ‘Chhath’ means sixth and signifies the sixth day or shasthi of the Karthik month.

Chhath is also celebrated in the summer (March-April) and is called Chaiti Chhath. The winter Chhath known as ‘Dala Chhath’ celebrated after Diwali is more popular and culminates the Hindu festivals for the year. Chhath songs are ever popular and have a unique and distinct note to it which brings solace and serenity to life. Chhath Puja is the only festival that worships the setting as well as the rising sun. Here, we have curated a few Chhath songs of popular singers like Sharda Sinha and Anuradha Paudwal for you to listen to and play during the Chhath festival.

1. Kelwa Ke Paat Par
Sharda Sinha the famous folk-singer from Bihar is known best for her Chhath Puja songs and the above song is also one of the gems from her repertoire. The song talks about the devotee who is doing Chhath vrata and is offering her prayers to the Sun God which can be seen through the leaves of a banana tree.

2.Pahile Pahil Chhathi Maiya
This is a new-age song that was sung once again by Sharda Sinha and describes the first time a woman takes up the onus of keeping her family traditions intact by keeping Chhath puja. The video shows a young couple who observes the Chhath puja in a foreign land and prays to Sun God for divine forgiveness and blessings for their future and the entire family.

3.Kaanch Hi Baans Ke Behengiya

Sung by Anuradha Paudwal this is one of the most famous and popular Chhath songs. The song is a request by the devotee who is doing Chhath puja to her husband and her brother-in-law to be careful of all the offerings and food items that are made to appease the Sun God and entreats them to carefully reach the banks of the river without spilling any food items from the bamboo vessels so that the offerings to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya can be made.

4.Hey Ganga Maiya

The song sung by Sharda Sinha relates the devotees’ prayers to the River Ganges and her comparisons of the family members of her husband’s family to that of the Ramayana’s characters like Lakshmana and Kaushalya.

5.Aragh Ke Ber

The song sung by Anuradha Paudwal worships to the Sun God and talks about the offering given to the Sun God during sunset and during sunrise. The song is soulful and touches a serene spot in your heart which will definitely make you yearn for home.

6.Hey Chhathi Maiya

The ever-popular song sung by Sharda Sinha is addressed to Chhati Maiya and the devotee requests her to accept her offerings and her prayers at the ghats of the river in Patna. It elaborates the preparations made during Chhath Puja and all the hardship that the devotee went through to make her festival and vrata a successful one.

7.Aadit Manaila

Sung by Anuradha Paudwal this song once again talks about the preparations that the devotee observing Chhath puja vrata has done and her hopes, desires, and prayers to Sun God and Chhati Maiya through which she aims to fulfill her wishes.

8.Kabahu Naa Chhooti Chhath

This is one of the male versions of Chhath Puja songs which once again feature Kranti Prakash Jha, and Kristine Zedek. The video and the song is self explanatory where the ongoing tradition of Chhath puja is maintained. Unlike many Hindu festivals where the women of the household take lead and observe fast Chhath Puja can be done by either gender and this video beautifully depicts just that. The importance of keeping your traditions and beliefs alive is a very integral part of your psyche.

These Chhath puja songs are the essence of one of the oldest and still prevalent and important festivals of India. We are sure that with these songs your preparations for the festivals would be complete. Chhath Puja is a very rigorous and difficult vrata or fast to observe and that is one of the major reasons that not many people are observing it today but it is one of the most revered Hindu festivals ever and will remain for eons to come.
