Brian Patrick Robert Dowling (born 13 June 1978) is an Irish television presenter who rose to fame after being crowned the winner of the second series of the British reality television show Big Brother in 2001.

He also won Ultimate Big Brother in 2010, and was the runner-up of Irish reality television series, Fáilte Towers in August 2008. Click Here to View Big Brother

Early life and Big Brother





Before he entered the public eye, Dowling, from Rathangan, County Kildare, Ireland, trained as a holiday rep and air steward, working as a flight attendant for Ryanair. He came out as gay to his parents only two weeks before appearing on the reality television game show, Big Brother, in 2001. He was the eventual winner of the series, beating Helen Adams in the final and polling 4,231,660 votes (58%) out of a total 7,255,094. He has been voted favourite ever Big Brother housemate in the UK on several occasions. In 2010 Brian returned to compete in the final Big Brother and he became the Ultimate Big Brother Housemate. Brian spent a total of 82 days in the Big Brother house, 64 for his original stay and later 18 days for Ultimate Big Brother. He also hold a record for never being placed up for eviction during his stays in the big brother house.

Media career

Brian's most recent television venture has been a contestant on TV3's Celebrity Salon, in which he and several other Irish celebrities (Pippa O'Connor, Leigh Arnold, Virginia Macari, Celia Holman Lee and Breffny Morgan) learn the tools of the beauty trade. Celebrity Salon began airing on Monday 7 June 2010. Tasks included giving facials, waxing, performing cosmetic surgery, hairdressing and styling.





Dowling went on to present SMTV Live, becoming the first openly gay children's television presenter. He also presented his own show on ITV, Brian's Boyfriends, as well as narrating the Channel 4 reality show The Salon.


In 2002, Brian co-hosted the Elle Style Awards with BBC Radio 1 presenter Jo Whiley. In 2003 he joined Duncan James and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson in presenting the Now Magazine Style Awards, where he also won the award for Most Stylish UK TV Personality."



Dowling regularly stood in for Liz Bonnin on LivingTV's Celebrity Extra show in 2004. He has also voiced numerous adverts and TV series and has presented the companion show to I'm Famous and Frightened!. In 2005, he had a short role in a new spinoff drama from Footballers' Wives.
In July 2005, Dowling fronted the Party in the Park concert in Leeds with Coronation Street's Nikki Sanderson. He then went on to front the Irish O2 in the Park concert, in Phoenix Park, Dublin, alongside Fran Cosgrave and Caroline Morahan in August 2005.



Dowling hosted a showbiz slot on Vernon Kay's BBC Radio 1 Saturday morning show from 9 October 2004 to September 2006. He was chosen in September 2005 to represent SMTV Live, which he co-hosted from January 2002 to July 2003, in ITV's 50th Anniversary celebrations on a special edition of Saturday morning children's entertainment show, Ministry of Mayhem.

In October 2005, Dowling presented a series of special Christmas features as part of Sky Digital's Interactive platform programming, titled Christmas Wrapped Up, in which he reviewed and helped to promote products that were available for purchase in the shopping areas of Sky Digital's Sky Active service.


Dowling was reintroduced as a presenter on ITV in March 2006 when the network launched its ITV Play subsidiary. Along with six others, Dowling was signed up as a presenter of the network's interactive telephone show, The Mint. The game show ran till 2007.


Dowling was a contestant in the ITV reality series Hell's Kitchen during September 2007, in which he competed against other celebrities to impress celebrity chef Marco Pierre White. Dowling finished in third place. Whilst participating, he had numerous clashes with fellow contestant Jim Davidson because of what Dowling interpreted as Davidson's homophobic slurs. Davidson was subsequently asked to leave the show as a contestant due to what ITV described as "unacceptable remarks" against Dowling.


Following on from this, in August 2008, Dowling was a contestant in the Irish reality television show, Fáilte Towers, where he and 12 other celebrities had to take on the roles of hotel staff. He came second to John Creedon. He recently appeared in a special episode of Come Dine With Me, and appeared alongside three other previous winners of Big Brother.

Theatre

Dowling has appeared in popular Irish Christmas pantomimes, at Dublin's Tivoli Theatre. In December 2008-January 2009, he starred as the evil Captain Hook in Anthem Productions' presentation of Peter Pan, and this year he stars as Bridie the Ugly Sister in their production of Cinderella opposite TV3's Alan Hughes.

And now Brian Dowling has been named the Ultimate Big Brother champion. The former trolley dolly was the bookies favourite from the moment he returned to the house, proving the 32-year-old was still as popular as when he first won Big Brother 2.

But the real star of last night's five-hour final show was host Davina McCall, who has been with the series since the very beginning back in 2000.

The event sees 50 regional finalists from England, Scotland and Wales compete for the coveted title of Miss Universe GB, where they will be judged by a panel from the world of fashion and celebrity. The new beauty queen, Miss Universe GB 2010 will represent The United Kingdom in Miss Universe 2010 competition, an event that is owned by Mr Donald Trump.

Brian is attending the TVNow Awards this Saturday 18th April, 2009, at a star-studded black-tie ceremony in Dublin's Mansion House. The event hosted by Lorraine Keane will honour the best presenters and shows on Irish television with cast members from the British popular soaps travelling over for the event. Brian attended the VIP style awards at Shelbourne House Dublin on Friday March 6th. The VIP style awards are said to be the most glamorous awards in the Irish calendar with invites very much sought after. Well done to Brian for being runner-up on Fáilte Towers. The voting is over and the winner of the show was John Creedon whose charity was Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin for sick children, a charity that was close to his heart as he lost his granddaughter at 8 weeks old and spent much of his time at the hospital during those weeks. All the charities must have benefited greatly from the hard work put in by all the celebrities these past two weeks they are all to be applauded.. Brian did brilliantly on the show, he was the one all rounder in there. He worked very hard, spending 8 of his days in the kitchen - he said he never got chance to work in the bar - was the consummate professional when manager, and running reception, but also added the ultimate ingredient necessary to make any reality TV show work, he was entertaining. It was lovely to watch the Brian we all came to love on Big Brother surface once again on a reality show. The show however left a bitter taste on the final night, with many fans voicing their disgust at the lack of highlights or chat with Brian when he came out of the hotel in second place. The celebrities who came both 4th - Jennifer, and 3rd - Don all had a chat and their highlights shown on leaving the hotel. Brian was just hurried out of the door, and then it immediately went back to the winner John. After all his hard work on the show it did seem that he was denied any moment of glory, and his fans denied the chance to enjoy his second place victory. However, Brian is our champion and we salute him, he did a wonderful job of raising money for his charity The Make a Wish Foundation and to come second when his profile in Ireland is nowhere near as high as many of his fellow celebrities was a real achievement. Hopefully this show will bring him a whole new legion of fans. I am sure that Brian will want to thank everyone who voted for him when he returns home gets a much needed rest.

Brian is once again hosting the Belfast Pride Prince and Princess contest at The Kremlin nightclub Belfast. The winners of the contest will grace the Kremlin Float at the forthcoming ‘Pride Parade’. It is 3 years since Brian last hosted this event at the Kremlin, although over the years the last one being the Belfast heat of Mr Gay UK in 2006. On Friday 20th June, a star studded judging panel crowned Sinead Noonan (Miss Meath) the new Miss Ireland at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry, Dublin. A 21-year-old drama student from Dunboyne, Sinead hopes to become a famous Irish actress and open her own drama school. The event was hosted by Brian Dowling and Myleene Klass and was attended by Ireland's most famous along with the contestants’ family and friends. National and international celebrity judges on the panel included Miss World 2006 Tat'ana Kucharova, Louis Walsh, Amanda Byram, Pamela Flood, Rachel Kavanagh and Matt DiAngelo. After the crowning Shayne Ward performed for the crowd. First runner-up to the Miss Ireland crown was Sarah Stokes from Laois. Second runner-up was Aoife Gallager from Clare.

Brian presented the award for the Best Irish Folk/Traditional Artist to Damien Dempsey at Ireland's equivalent of the BRITS - The Meteor Music Awards, on Friday 15th February 2008 at the RDS Simmonscourt Dublin. Among those attending the awards ceremony was Westlife, Boyzone, Sinead O’Connor. Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron also attended the awards being in Dublin for the Dublin International Film Festival. This is the second time that Brian has presented an award at the event. Sky One has signed Big Brother and Hell’s Kitchen star Brian Dowling to front Cirque: Backstage at the Big Top, a sister show to reality hit Cirque de Celebrité presented by Jenni Falconer. The series will launch on Thursday 11 October at 8:00pm exclusive to Sky One and Sky One HD.

Cirque: Backstage at the Big Top will feature an interview with the evicted celebrity and take viewers behind the scenes to witness all the tears and tantrums of the celebrities as they try to get to grips with circus s****s that would take professionals years to master.

Brian commented: “There couldn’t be a more dramatic, colourful and glitzy show on TV, so I’m thrilled to be joining the Cirque de Celebrité team. The girls are glamorous, the boys’ outfits show off their best assets and I’ll be there to capture every little bit of action in glorious high-definition. Tonight sees the launch of ITV Play's first branded programme "The Mint" on ITV1 at midnight, although Brian's first show isn't until tomorrow evening/Sunday morning which he present with Beverly French. Following on, Brian will be presenting the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night shows of this coming week. He will then be working to a schedule of 3 nights on and 6 nights off. THE MINT The Mint is a live interactive gameshow filled with a feast of games and entertainment. Brian is to present the "Party in the Park" concert taking place at Temple Newsam, Leeds on Sunday July 17th 2005. The concert will go out live and exclusively on LIVINGtv. Brian and his co-host Nikki Sanderson (Candice from Coronation Street) will introduce a star-packed line-up including LibertyX, Lemar, Rooster, Melanie C and Tony Christie. If you wanted a celebrity to present awards at an exclusive Travel Industry event, who better than a former Air Steward and Holiday Rep turned TV & radio star! Brian took part at the Responsible Tourism Day of the event at the ExCel Arena in London’s Docklands between 8-11 November 2004.


The prestigious event - exclusive to the travel industry - was opened by Seb Coe, and over 44,000 industry professionals from over 190 countries were in attendance.

He may be our Mr GAY UK every year, but this time he is presenting rather than winning the award! Brian is to present the MR GAY UK 2004 FINAL on LIVINGtv when the show goes out live on Sunday the 28th of November at 10pm from G-A-Y. The nation, and a panel of celebrity judges decides which of the 20 finalists taking part will walk away with this year's sought after title.

Brian is taking part in Celebrity Superstars Battle of the Channels for Sports Aid on BBC1 on July 10th, where Celebrity teams from rival TV channels will battle it out in a charity contest in aid of Sport Relief. The challenges that the team will face will be: 100 metres sprint, swimming relay, gym tests, tug of war and a mile running relay.

Vernon was delighted to have Brian on his show this week, in what Vernon dubbed and 'exclusive', as Brian had never really spoken at length before about his time in BB. Brian will be hosting London club G-A-Y’s biggest night of the year – their “**** Idol” final on June 12th. It’s a light hearted gay evening, and Brian is the presenter. The event was last year presented by Lily Savage.

Brian had a number of clips featured in the C4's 20 Big Brother's Best Bits. ... No 15 The Dance Task. No11 the Dinner Dates No 9 Brian's Birthday No 2 All the things we love about Brian and Brian winning Big Brother 2 Brian appeared extensively on the show giving his views on all the BB2 clips. In the run up to this programme E4 featured the 50 Best Bits as voted for by the fans on their C4 website. BB2 getting 13 placings. This time Brian's highest placing was at No3 with 'All the things we love about Brian'.

At the Now magazine Style Awards at the Clothes Show on 7th December, Brian waltzed off with the award for most stylish TV personality. The award was presented by Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Duncan James, and Brian beat off some pretty stiff competition from the likes of Tara herself, and Vernon Kay. He gave us a perfect illustration of why he won the award as he went up to receive it, sporting a black suit and very funky black patent trainers!

It was reported in today's Daily Mirror that Tess says she has asked Brian to be an Usher at her forthcoming wedding to Vernon, which take place next month in Bolton. An excited Brian said "It's going to be amazing." Tess and Vernon have not gone down the route of selling out their wedding to a magazine, and will pose up after the wedding for any photographers who are there.
