It’s been a while since saas-bahu bid farewell to the small screen, and since then, shows with social messages have been ruling the airwaves.



Balika Vadhu, Colors
Plot: The show deals with the sensitive issue of child marriage and supports widow re-marriage. The backdrop is rural Rajasthan, where child marriage is still widely practised. In the show, the victims of this ritual are Anandi (Avika Gor) and Jagdish (Avinash Mukherjee) who get married at a very young age. Jagdish is the only grandson of Kalyani Devi (Surekha Sikri), who follows all the rituals and superstitions strictly.

Sabki Laadli Bebo, Star Plus
Plot: The show is about a simple family that has always wanted a baby girl. Their wish finally comes true, when they have a daughter after having three sons, and she is their laadli. Bebo brings joy to their lives, but there’s a twist in the story which haunts the family.

Mitwa Phool Kamal Ke, Star Plus
Plot: The show plays on the theme of casteism, and revolves around an upper caste Hindu family in a UP village. There is an innocent love story between Birju (Mohit Malhotra), who belongs to a lower caste, and Bela (Tanvi Bhatia), an upper caste girl. They are aware of the vast differences between them but fall in love anyway

Na Aana Iss Des Mein Lado, Colors
Plot: The show is based on the very sensitive issue of female infanticide, which is still practised in many parts of the country. It is set in a village where the birth of a girl is still considered a sin. And, if the new born is a girl, she is sacrificed in the name of God.
