Chennai: May 27, 2012

That brings us to an end of the fifth season of the Indian Premier League. We will have a comprehensive tournament review package tomorrow for you to read. For the moment, I can offer you Siddarth Ravindran's match report. Abhishek Purohit signing off, along with Suneer Chowdhary, and our scorer Sanjay Murari, and all my colleagues who brought the season's action to you. Cheers.

For the first time, Kolkata Knight Riders lift the IPL trophy
Gautam Gambhir: "Only one word comes in mind again, mission accomplished. I thought whenever the situation came, the guys would stand up. This one is for Kolkata. Balaji has been our unsung hero. We were playing for him, Missing such a game in front of his home crowd was big. Chasing 195 against defending champions in their backyard shows the character of Bisla. It proves captain is only as good as his team. Team makes successful captain, Successful captain does not make successful team. There is only one time I have taken out my pads in the tournament, and that day we could not chase against Kings XI. Since then I have not taken off my pads. Kolkata have supported us throughout, this one us for them."

KKR players get their winners' medals now. Bisla leads the side
MS Dhoni: "I thought the ball started coming on slightly better in the second half. Bisla and Kallis got the partnership KKR needed. Cricket is a game of plus ten minus ten. It is always like that. Under the conditions, we batted well. It was a bit slower in the first innings. Batsmen did a good job. Not to forget we could have looked for 200 and ended up with 170. Our bowlers were not getting reverse swing. Then it becomes easy for the fast bowlers to execute the wide yorkers. I am happy with our performance."

CSK players come up to collect their runners-up medals.

The Kolkata Knight Riders recorded their first ever IPL win as they trounced defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, in a tightly contested match at Chepauk. Manvinder Sultansingh Bisla and Jacques Kallis were the architects of KKR’s historic victory; the pair helping their side to a five-wicket win, after CSK had posted a daunting score of 190.

Earlier, KKR were forced to make a couple of changes to their side with Laxmipathy Balaji’s hamstring injury not having healed itself completely. Brett Lee came in to the playing XI replacing Balaji, while MS Bisla stepped into the wicketkeeper’s role, due to which Debabrata Das sat out. CSK, meanwhile, played an unchanged side.

The defending champions put on a dominating batting performance for the third game in a row. After MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat first, Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey struck an 87-run stand to give the hosts a perfect foundation for a big score. Vijay pulled the quicks and used his feet to loft the KKR spinners. Hussey, on the other hand, charged down the wicket to the pacers and brought out, both the sweep and the reverse sweep to unleash a flurry of fours and sixes. KKR eventually got their first breakthrough when Vijay (42), attempting to pull Rajat Bhatia over deep square-leg, was caught by a diving Shakib Al Hasan in the 11th over.

Vijay’s wicket didn’t slow CSK down though. Suresh Raina played a blinder to ensure the defending champions stayed on course to post a big score. Raina heaved Kallis for six over midwicket in the 12th over and smote Yusuf Pathan for 14 runs in three balls in the 14th before smashing Brett Lee and Sunil Narine for a six each in the 16th and 17th overs respectively.

The Kolkata franchise picked their second wicket when Hussey (54) was bowled by Kallis off the first ball of the 18th over. But with Raina hitting a feisty 73 off just 38 balls and MS Dhoni chipping in with a nine-ball 14*, CSK finished at a challenging 190 for three in 20 overs. Raina was out, caught brilliantly by Lee off the last ball of CSK’s innings.

Chasing 191 to win their maiden IPL title, KKR’s hopes were dealt a crushing below when in-form batsman Gautam Gambhir (2) was bowled by Ben Hilfenhaus off a slower ball in just the first over. Bisla, who opened with Gambhir, nonetheless set about reviving the KKR innings. The opening batsman bludgeoned Albie Morkel for four fours in the fourth over and then lofted R Ashwin over the boundary ropes for a couple of sixes in the sixth to bring up KKR’s 50 in just 5.4 overs. Bisla then targeted Dwayne Bravo, flicking and lofting the CSK pacer for a four and a six over in the ninth overs, after which he hit Shadab Jakati for two consecutive fours to take his team to 111 for one in 11 overs.

With Bisla firing, Kallis was happy to play second fiddle, and he had scored only 28 when the 100-run partnership between the two was brought up in the 11th over. However, when Bisla (89 off 48 balls) was caught at point by Badrinath in the 15th over, the all-rounder switched gears to take control of the run-chase. With KKR needing 50 off the last five overs, Kallis went after Shadab Jakati and Bravo. He hit them for a total of 23 runs in the 16th and 17th overs respectively.

CSK tried their best to stymie KKR’s chances with a couple of wickets, including Kallis’ scalp, at the end. However, with KKR needing 16 to win off the last seven deliveries, Shakib Al Hasan (11* off seven) punished Ben Hilfenhaus for bowling a full toss over waist height (no ball) by scooping the CSK pacer for four to fine leg. Manoj Tiwary (nine not out off three balls) then heaved Dwayne Bravo for consecutive boundaries in the last over to bring up a famous win for the Knight Riders.

Scorecard

Man-of-the-match: Manvinder Sultansingh Bisla for his match-winning 48-ball 89 (8x4, 5x6) that helped KKR win their first ever IPL title.

Chennai: May 27, 2012

A heroic effort by opener Manvinder Bisla and Jacques Kallis has helped Kolkata Knight Riders beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a close encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 final on Sunday.

Chasing a mammoth target, Kolkata suffered a major blow as Ben Hilfenhaus removed the in-form Gautam Gambhir.

But Bisla, replacing Brendon McCullum gave a blistering start to the Knight Riders as he put on a valiant 136-run partnership with all-rounder Jacques Kallis.

However Bisla’s dismissal in the 15th over hampered KKR’s run-chase. But Kallis continued to consolidate the innings from the other end.

The South African all-rounder ran out of partners and eventually lost his wicket at the crucial juncture in the 19th over with 16 runs still needed.

But a cool temperament by Shakib Al Hasan and Manoj Tiwary in the death overs helped KKR cross the finish line; KKR secured a maiden IPL title.

Earlier Chennai had set a huge target of 191 runs for Kolkata.

Batting first, Chennai got off to a blazing start with both the openers Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey looked confident.

The duo took calculated risks and kept the scoreboard moving at a brisk pace. Vijay smashed 19 runs off Brett Lee in the last over of power play.

On a flat track, even the in-form Sunil Narine looked helpless as the Chennai batsmen kept on bludgeoning the bowlers.

Raina later accompanied by in-form skipper MS Dhoni propelled CSK to a massive total of 190 runs.

Brief Score: CSK 190 for 3 in 20 overs (Suresh Raina 73, Michael Hussey 54, Murali Vijay 42; Rajat Bhatia 1 for 23) lost to KKR 192 for 5 (Manvinder Bisla 89, Jacques Kallis 69; Ben Hilfenahus 2 for 25) by 5 wickets

Man-of-the-match: Manvinder Bisla

Man-of-the-series: Sunil Narine

We have a new IPL titlist. Inspired by Manvinder Bisla and Jacques Kallis' divergent half-centuries in a cracker of a final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Kolkata Knight Riders roared to their maiden IPL trophy with a memorably tense chase of 190 against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings.

There were three charismatic innings of contrasting styles on show at Chennai's home ground and, ultimately, it was Bisla's fluency and Kallis' unflappability that helped KKR overcome the challenge set by Suresh Raina's display of bottom-handed slog-sweeping. Following the loss of Gautam Gambhir in the opening over, Bisla kick-started Kolkata's run-chase by hitting Albie Morkel for four boundaries and kept the pace going through to his highest IPL score of 87. Kallis was restrained during his half-century, brought up off 39 balls, and his 136-run stand with Bisla helped end Chennai's superb run in the 2012 playoffs in dramatic fashion and denied them a hat-trick of trophies. Chennai didn't give up and took the match into the final over, but Manoj Tiwary finished the deal with two leg-side hits with two balls remaining.

KKR Won The 2012 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 5 or the IPL 2012 or the DLF IPL 2012 (owing to title sponsorship reasons), was the fifth season of the Indian Premier League, initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007 with the first season played in 2008. The tournament began on 4 April and ended on 27 May 2012.

This season was won by the Kolkata Knight Riders by beating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets. This season the number of teams in the league went from ten to nine with the termination of Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Upon progression, the season was criticized for its decreased television viewership compared to the previous seasons. This edition of the IPL has been the most competitive with 14 matches producing results in the last over. Near the end of the season, the season faced various hurdles including a spot fixing case, which allegedly included 5 players caught on a sting operation carried on by a local news channel.

Player of the Season is Sunil Narine. Narine: "It has been a pleasure coming here and performing. Hopefully I am picked for the England series, and I can go down there and give it my all."

Loud cheers as the great Rahul Dravid walks up to receive the Fairplay Award. Dravid: "Don't think the award had to do anything with me. The boys bowled their overs in time, and that had a big part to play in it. It was an incredible final."

Orange Cap to Chris Gayle, Purple Cap to Morne Morkel, presented to his brother Albie

Mandeep Singh, the Kings XI batsman, is the Rising Star of the tournament. Mandeep: "Would have felt even happier had my team made it here. Had a good domestic season, and my preparation was good as well. Would like to thank Vikram bhai [Rathore, the Punjab coach]. Dream is to play for India, for at least ten years." Not a bad dream to have, and looks like he has the capability to make it come true

Manvinder Bisla is the Man of the Match. Bisla: "Feeling very happy, I played my part, Brendon is a class player, his record speaks for himself, due to Balaji's injury, we had to leave him out, I am lucky I got a chance, Till the last ball, it did not feel like we had made it."

From being the joke of the IPL for the first three seasons to champions has been some journey for Kolkata Knight Riders. They invested in a different team, they invested in a new leader in Gautam Gambhir, and they have the title in the second season with the new team

The highest chase easily in an IPL final this. Only once has the side batting second won the IPL, when Rajasthan Royals chased 163 off the last ball in 2008, against CSK. Today's pitch was the same on which CSK chased 205 against RCB earlier this season

Manvinder Bisla: "I don't think I have hit as well, good to play this in the finals to help win it for my team. There was no plan, wanted to go out there to enjoy, after Gambhir got out, I felt a tad tensed but after getting one or two to the fence, I got the confidence. Kallis is a legend, batting along side him was a great opportunity, he asked me to keep it simple and get going. I am happy from inside (when asked to smile by Pommie Mbwanga!)"

Brendon McCullum: "Pretty satisfied. We have had four hard years. To come out in tough conditions and chase 195 against CSK is very satisfying. People back in Kolkata and Bengal will be proud of us. We have been relaxed the whole way through. We never lost the belief in our own abilities

Trevor Bayliss, KKR coach: "We played a team game throughout. The partnership between Bisla and Kallis was the winning one. People said we could not do it without Gautam scoring runs, but we proved we could tonight. Wicket tonight was a lot better batting wicket than the one we played on here few weeks ago."

Shah Rukh Khan
: "i want to thank Gautam and my boys."

L Balaji
: "We are one family and we did what we wanted to do from day one. We stuck to each other, ultimately it paid off, great feeling to lift the trophy."

Jacques Kallis
: "No, not easy to run those ones and twos, lot of hard work, you put hard work and get results like this, it feels good. Being an allrounder is hard work. CSK are a champion side, credit to our guys to beat them at their home ground, they don't get beaten a lot here. Chasing 195 It is a little bit old age I think [jokes about the hamstring]. But it should be alright. We did not panic, that was the key. At times, you can panic chasing 195."

Brett Lee
: "It is not only about those who played tonight. Everyone has done a brilliant job, guys who played through the tournament, coach, support staff. I had my batting gloves on, I was very nervous, but that is T20 cricket. That is why Jacques Kallis is the best in the world."
SRK is embracing whoever comes close to him.

Yusuf Pathan
: "The way Gautam has captained in the last two years, it is comparable to Shane Warne [at Rajasthan]. He has supported the players a lot. We have played as a team. We enjoyed each others' success. I got to play the role in the semi-final, today Bisla and Kallis did it. The way Bisla was in and out of the team, he did very well. It was tough to leave out a top player like McCullum."

Sunil Narine
: "Coming in a big tournament and having a big impact is huge. But it is about 11 players."

Wasim Akram
: "I have won World Cup for Pakistan, but this is very different feeling. I am very happy. Knowing our owner SRK, it is going to be a madhouse."

Shakib Al Hasan
: "I dont think we will be able to sleep tonight. I think Shah Rukh has gone mad. I dont know what he is doing."

Shah Rukh Khan clambers up onto the railing of the stand he is in and waves his arms. KKR squad rush out on to the field. Dhoni shakes hands with everyone. Gautam Gambhir strides out, Jacques Kallis being lifted by one of his team-mates, a disappointed Dhoni and Ashwin walk away. Yusuf smiles broadly, Bravo shaking his head in disappointment. Wasim Akram looks very happy. Ryan ten Doeschate lifts Gambhir high into the air. Captain embraces the matchwinner Bisla

Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details

For Chennai Super Kings' third straight playoff match, a similar tale played out putting them in prime position for their third straight IPL title. For this third time this week, a magical innings from a batsman seemingly out of form left the opposition clueless and Super Kings with a giant total.
After MS Dhoni and M Vijay, it was the turn of Suresh Raina to pull off a blinder. He walked in with Super Kings already in a position of strength, with Michael Hussey and M Vijay clicking again, and proceeded to pulverise the best of the Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers.

Toss Chennai Super Kings chose to bat v Kolkata Knight Riders

MS Dhoni, famously poor with the toss, won his third in three matches against Kolkata Knight Riders this season and chose to bat in the final in Chennai. It may be a big match but Dhoni seemed unfazed, barely containing a grin as the commentators went through the build-up to the toss. As expected, Chennai Super Kings made no changes to the XI that worked so well in the playoffs.

Knight Riders, though, were forced to make changes because their seamer L Balaji didn't recover in time from his hamstring problem. They decided to go with the pace of Brett Lee, which meant sidelining their regular wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum, with Manvinder Bisla returning for only his second match in more than a month. Manoj Tiwary, however, was cleared to play after he had missed the first qualifier because of a hamstring niggle.

Chennai Super Kings: 1 M Vijay, 2 Michael Hussey, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Shadab Jakati

Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Gautam Gambhir (capt), 2 Manvinder Bisla (wk), 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Manoj Tiwary, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Laxmi Shukla, 8 Rajat Bhatia, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Iqbal Abdulla, 11 Sunil Narine
