Popular show "Uttaran" is set to take an 18-year leap, with actress Tina Datta playing a double role as 35-plus Ichcha and her young daughter Meethi.

New Delhi, March 20 (IANS) Popular show "Uttaran" is set to take an 18-year leap, with actress Tina Datta playing a double role as 35-plus Ichcha and her young daughter Meethi. The show will air on Colors from March 26 and Tina is excited about her double role.

"I feel privileged that the show that launched my career is also helping me take it forward in such a spectacular manner. I feel blessed that I not only get to play two different characters, but also get to experiment with my look," she said.

"I am spending as much time as possible working on how I will make Ichcha and Meethi two distinct characters, yet with similar characteristics. It is a challenging job and I am absolutely excited about working on it." Actress Sreejita De has been roped in to play Mukta, daughter of Ichcha's childhood friend Tapasya. They will be supported by Yashdeep Nain and Chaitanya Choudhury.

Even as the new characters lead the way, the show's popular characters Jogi Thakur, Ammo and Naani will continue being a part of it. The show started off with the portrayal of Ichcha and Tapasya building their friendship as kids, their squabbles as adolescents and their love-hate relationship as adults.

The new leap will put focus on their children and life thereon. "'Uttaran' is a struggle between the haves and the have not's which has been portrayed through the lives of Ichcha and Tapasya so far," Prashaant Bhatt, head of fiction, Colors, said in a press statement.



"The 18-year leap is a natural progression that will not only continue the portrayal of their lives, but also shift focus to their children. The new characters will infuse the show with a new life thus making it very interesting besides retaining the core concept of 'Uttaran'. "While the existing characters will now move on to take on some more interesting shades, like Tina's mother-daughter avatar, new faces will take on strong characters that take the story forward. "We are sure that Meethi and Mukti will recreate the amazing chemistry that was shared by Ichcha and Tapasya when they started their journey," added Bhatt.

"Uttaran" started in December 2008, after which the storyline took a 10-year leap forward in 2009 and actors Tina and Rashmi Desai were introduced. Post the secon leap, the story will not only focus on the continuing trials and tribulations in Ichcha's life, but also the new twist in the tale with Meethi and Mukta's friendship while they have no knowledge about the reality of their past.

This is a story of Ichcha, born in the slums of a city but one who desires much more than what her destiny has in store for her. In the hope of giving her a better life, Ichcha’s mother joins a rich household as a maid.

Ichcha befriends Tapasya (the daughter of the lady of the house), but soon learns the hard lesson that servants will never be considered at part of a family, no matter how much they sacrifice for them.

However things change when Mahindra, suitor of Tapasya, falls in love with good natured Ichcha. Can she dare to expect him to stand up for her & their love? Or can the poor never be allowed to be happy?

Damini is Ichcha’s mother; she is around 30 years old and a widow. She earns a living by working as a maid in a rich household. She lives with Ichcha in a rented house in a Mumbai slum. Damini is uneducated, pitiable and full of values. She is soft spoken, straight-forward and reserved. Ichcha is her only child whom she loves dearly and seek happiness for her. She lives with only one motive in life that is to provide her daughter every possible means to a superior livelihood. She keeps her problems to herself and never lets Ichcha know their dreadful state of affairs. She encourages Ichcha to dream big and preserves Ichcha’s spirits. She tries to fulfill every wish that Ichcha has like a doting mother. She works hard to make ends meet and has been single handedly taking care of Ichcha after her husband’s death. She has compromised with her situation and is contented with whatever she has. She keeps telling Ichcha to be happy and assertive given the situation they live in. But Ichcha is far from contended and hopes to secede from this life.

Pragati Mehra Role:Divya Thakur
Divya Thakur is a typical high-heeled woman who is very conscious of standing in the society. She is arrogant, sturdy, stylish and divergent from Jogi Thakur. She takes care of the Thakur household and illustrates arrogance and callous behavior. She only gets feeble before her husband, Jogi Thakur for whom she has great respect and regard. She fumbles when Jogi is around and usually hesitant to go against her husband’s decision or opinion. Tapasya being her only child, she is over-protective towards her and cares for her. Only thing that bothers Divya is her inability to produce another kid and fulfill Tapasya wish of having another sibling. Another thing that makes Divya feel guilty is not producing a male heir. In the past seven generations of the Thakurs, hers is the only girl child. But her husband, Jogi Thakur has been extremely supportive towards her and has been her pillar of strength.

The only downbeat about Ichcha is that she is quick-tempered as she cannot accept any wrong doings. A go-getter, Ichcha defies what destiny has given her. She is troubled by the fact that just because they are poor they are humiliated time and again. She aspires to break free of all this and re-write her fate.

Ishita Panchal Role:Tapasya
Seven year old Tapasya is the daughter and only child of affluent builder Jogi and Divya Thakur. Born with the proverbial golden-spoon, she gets everything she fancies. She has a doting father, over-possessive mother, a pampering Grandmother and an army of servants to take care of her demands. Despite all this, Tapasya is modest and disciplined. She is has a good heart and respect elders. At times when her demands are not fulfilled, she throws tantrums. She has everything that she can dream of but is still sad as she has no one to play with her because she doesn’t have any siblings. Being an only child, her mother pampers her which makes her claustrophobic at times. Since she is the centre of attention for everyone, she surely knows how to get away with her demands with the entire family. Ichcha comes into her life and fills the gap of a companion. She develops an instant liking for Ichcha and befriends her. She treats Ichcha with admiration as well as shares all her joys and sorrows with her. Soon a strong bond of closeness is created between the two girls.

Ishita Panchal better known as little Tapasya of Uttaran walks the ramp for a show that promotes the fight against terrorism…


Ishita Panchal may have disappeared from the small screen for now, but that doesn't mean the girl is away from the spotlight. She became a household name thanks to her role as Tapasya in Colors' Uttaran. She is currently busy endorsing a lot of humane causes.

Says Ishita, "I'm walking the ramp for a show titled 'Peace Walk' which honors everyone who sacrificed their lives on 26/11 and also supports the fight against terrorism. I'll be wearing a black and white skirt teamed with a white top. It was me who picked out the outfit!"

Apparently, Ishita also walked the ramp for another charity event held earlier this month in Pune. She says, "On November 14th I walked the ramp for designer Avantika. The proceeds of the event went to Pune School & Home for the Blind."

So with all these events does Ishita miss her Uttaran days? "Yes, I miss working in Uttaran. It became like a second family to me. But now I enjoy in school," she signs off.

Inspite of the negative nature of the role, Rashmi Desai is happy that she got to play Tapasya in Colors’ Uttaran…


Rashmi Desai owes a lot to the character of Tapasya in Colors' Uttaran for the character has helped her grow as an actress.

Rashmi tells us, "The character of Tapasya has helped me grow as an actress a lot actually. Tapasya is not at all like me. Even though I've done shows in the past where my roles required a bit of portrayal of grey shades, for example in Pari Hoon Main I played a double role portraying both positive and negative characters. But that was nothing compared to what negativity I have to project in Uttaran. So it was very tough task set for me."

Rashmi goes on, "Tapasya is mean, psycho, selfish and likes to have her way even if other people get hurt. I'm totally not like that. But I have been successful in portraying her role. So I genuinely see a lot of growth in me as an actress."

She thanks her co-stars for helping her in pulling off Tappu's role. "Ammu, Vaishali Thakkar and Pratima Khanna they all helped me a lot. I've learnt a lot about acting from them. It was really very kind of them to do so," she signs off.

If you had thought that happy days are back again for Ichcha in COLORS' Uttaran, just stop, as Vansh has other plans in mind!!


TellyBuzz had reported earlier that COLORS' Uttaran will be having a honeymoon special involving both the couples, Vansh (Rohit Khurana) and Ichcha (Tina Dutta), Veer (Nandish Sandhu) and Tapasya (Rashmi Desai). However, we had also hinted that the intrigue factor will remain, and the viewers will be keen to know whether Vansh has really had a change of heart or he is just faking to have moved on!!

According to our source, "This honeymoon outing is yet another plan of Vansh to find out whether Veer and Ichcha continue to have feelings for each other. Vansh has completely lost it this time and he goes out of limits, to prove his point".

"Vansh takes Ichcha to a secluded house in the jungle, puts something in her drink which makes her unconscious. He goes back to the hotel they are in, and tells Veer that Ichcha got lost in the jungle. He has done this to test whether Veer goes all out looking for Ichcha. But Veer who has a genuine concern for Ichcha's safety goes into the jungle looking for her, and finds her in the room. Vansh and Tapasya see this, and Vansh again suspects that the two will have a jolly good time and will spend the night together and get back".

This particular reaction by Veer will infuriate Vansh even more!!

We tried calling Rohit Khurana but he remained unavailable.

We wonder whether the time is even coming when Vansh will get sane!!

Vansh aka Rohit Khurana of Color TV Uttaran has got a complete changed look…


Vansh aka Rohit Khurana of Colors' Uttaran who's character is slowly sinking into the grey shade has also been endured with a new look to suit his aggressive and to be mature personality.

A little birdie informed us that, "On the occasion of Tapsya's (Rashmi Desai) parent's 25th Anniversary celebration Vansh enters the party in a formal suit like Blazer and shirt also a more formal hair style."

When contacted, Rohit asserted, "Yes, I have got a makeover in the serial a very formal look and more than just apt attire for the occasion it could also be associated with the wickedness and aggression that my character is undergoing at present."

When asked whether the look would be retained even after the celebration scene he replied, "I have no idea about it. I think it depends upon the audience if they appreciate my new look we would try to retain it."
