Film-making is a lucrative business. There are no two opinions about it. Also the success of any film is measured today by its performance at the box office. While there has always been a debate between critical and commercial success, filmmakers and even actors have often chosen commercial success over rave reviews. In fact, the new trend which has turned out to be an obsession for everyone is the label ‘Rs 100 crore film’. Well, Rs 100 crore has now turned out to be a marketing strategy or benchmark for any filmmaker to call their film a bonafide hit. Interestingly, whenever we see the trailer of a film, the first though is whether the film will make Rs 100 crore or not. The latest example is Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju, that has shattered several records at the box office and entered the Rs 100 crore club in just 3 days. While Sanju became Ranbir Kapoor‘s fourth film to cross the 100 cr-mark, after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Barfi!, there are actors like Irrfan Khan, Rajkummar Rao and even megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who don’t have a single Rs 100 crore film to their credit. But how does it matter? They are still among our favourites and enjoy massive fan following. In fact, they have established their own market and target audience with their out of the box choices. To prove our point that ‘Rs 100 crore’ is NOT everything, we have the following examples for you… (Also Read: Karwaan trailer: Irrfan Khan’s brilliant act will leave you in splits; watch video)

Amitabh Bachchan
The Shahenshah of Bollywood has spent almost five decades in the entertainment industry. In this span, the megastar has given several blockbusters during the initial days of his career, be it Deewar, Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Don or Amar Akbar Anthony. With the changing times, the actor upgraded himself and chose films which find relevance with the masses today. Known as the pillar of Hindi cinema, Big B doesn’t have a ‘100 crore’ film, but does it even matter? The actor has an exhaustive list of achievements which includes awards and worldwide recognition.

Irrfan Khan

One mention of Irrfan Khan, and we remember the man who made his debut on a small screen and soon went on to become a popular name not only in India, but also in the West. From Star Bestsellers to Life of Pi and Jurassic World, Irrfan has come a long way in the industry. The international star, who established his image with niche cinema has successfully transformed himself into a commercial actor with Hindi Medium, which not only turned out to be a commercial success, but also bagged him the best actor award. Irrfan is entertaining us with his brilliant craft of acting is definitely more important to us than a Rs 100 crore film.

Rajkummar Rao
Would we be exaggerating if we say, Rajkummar has turned out to be the next Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood after Aamir Khan? Whenever we watch the promo of a Rajkummar Rao film, we are certain the film will be worth a watch. Well, such is the kind of impact Rajkummar has created. The actor has several solo hits to his credit like Newton, Trapped and Citylights made on a small budget and solid content, for which he bagged awards, won accolades and a good amount of fanbase as well.
With these examples, we can say that Rs 100 crore is not the only parameter of success for a film. A smart budget, promotion and marketing and above all its strong content plays a pivotal role in making a film hit. Always remember, every good film doesn’t score Rs 100 crore and every Rs 100 crore film is not a good one. As cinema lovers, we are not denying that keeping the track of box office collection is futile. But do you think it is that important a parameter to define the success an actor or a film?
