Default Winners/Losers - Box office roundup November 2018

Box office roundup November: Thanks to Badhaai Ho and 2.0, the month manages to survive the Thugs Of Hindostan debacle

November hasn't been too kind at the box office. Apart from a spillover, Badhaai Ho, nothing worked. Fortunately, 2.0 ended it on a glorious note and saved it from the brink of being a complete disaster. Why do we say so? This was the month when Diwali happened and so did Thugs of Hindostan. A film laced with heavyweights like Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan was off to a stupendous start only to falter with every passing day. Such was its state that Aamir had to publicly apologise for the movie. It hurts when makers ruin a perfect and cash-rich festival opportunity like Diwali. Let us tell you a bit more about how November gasped for breath every weekend till 2.0 happened.

Winners

It gives us immense joy and pride to talk about Badhaai Ho. A film that released in October managed to keep the momentum going come what may. Neither Aamir Khan nor the combined might of Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar could derail its run at the box office. It is still getting good traction at the theatres. After Thugs tanked, theatre owners allotted more shows to Badhaai Ho and we have some splendid performances and the story to thank for it. Bollywood has finally come-of-age and we super glad about it! We should also thank the audience for developing a finer taste in art to uplift the image of Indian Cinema. Badhaai Ho has become Ayushmann Khurrana's first Rs 100 crore film. It also falls in the category of Raazi and Stree where people never expected the films to earn so much.
Although it's a bit early to sing praises about Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar or Shankar for that matter for 2.0's collections, it did help November recover from debacles. The films' first day numbers are great and it is expected to skyrocket further.

Losers

It pains to talk about an Aamir Khan film in this category. The actor has not seen a setback of Thugs Of Hindostan's proportions since 2008. That was the time when Ghajini had released and box office numbers weren't the same again. The film's plot did a disservice to acting giants like Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. The director couldn't capitalise on that and hence the film failed. A Rs 300 crore film struggled to reach the Rs 150 crore mark... something we hadn't heard about an Aamir film for a decade now.
Less we talk about the likes of Mohalla Assi, Bhaiaji Superhittt and Pihu the better.

November trends

The month proved festival or no festival if the film is not up to the mark, the audience will reject it. Diwali helped Thugs Of Hindostan record the highest opening day in the history of Indian Cinema but it ended there. 2018 has been a learning experience that way. Race 3 released on Eid but failed again.

Coming up...

December will be perhaps the best month of this year because every weekend there are biggies which will help Bollywood end 2018 with a bang. There's Kedarnath, Aquaman, Zero and Simmba...which mean December might just become the blockbuster month of 2018.
