Social networking website MySpace, which allows users to store personal photos, videos and audio files, has admitted to losing data that had been uploaded over 12 years during a server migration. MySpace, whose headquarter is in Beverly Hills, California, was the largest social networking site in the world from 2005 to 2009, and it had even surpassed Google in June 2006 as the most visited website in the US.
According to the BBC, the site apologised for the huge loss of data with a message on its website reading any photos, videos and audio files uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available. Founded in 2003, the platform had attracted millions of users in its earlier days, but over the years lost its popularity. Apart from the firm admitting to the loss of data, there had been complaints several months back that music links were no longer working.
“As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from MySpace. We apologize for the inconvenience,” the firm said in a statement.
The site, which had been popular for sharing new music, had been credited with helping artists like the Arctic Monkeys and Kate Nash launch their careers.
In a tweet, Andy Baio, who helped build the Kickstarter crowd-funding site, stated he was skeptical about the loss of what could amount to some 50 million tracks by 14 million artists over that period.
MySpace, which had been popular before social networking sites like Facebook came on, underwent several changes to try and win back its users. It and its parent company were bought by Time Inc., which in turn was purchased by the Meredith Corporation on January 31, 2018.
