The Hindu festival Durga puja is celebrated in the month of September or October. It is the biggest festival in West Bengal and is also popular in Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand. The festival celebrates goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura, the shape-shifting buffalo demon. Durga puja starts on the sixth day of Navratri and ends with Dussehra on the tenth day.
