Reality TV: women on top
Earlier, most reality shows were dominated by male contestants. But there have been a few televisions divas who have proved their mettle and come out on top. We take a look at the women who got our vote when they participated in the shows and what they’re now.
Mona Singh: She rose to fame as the nerdy Jassi on Jassi Jaise Koi Nahi. And behind those unsightly braces and glasses was not only a beauty but also a potential reality show expert. She has won three realities so far: dance shows Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season one, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena with Harbhajan Singh and stand up comedy show Aree Deewano Mujhe Pehchano. She also hosted the second season Jhalak and then Extreme Makeover, where normal people were given the chance to drastically change their appearance with the help of experts. Currently, Mona hosts the talent hunt reality show titled Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega on Sony. She is also busy filming for her debut movie 3 Idiots, in which she plays Aamir Khan’s sister. |

Prachi Desai: Prachi began her career with Kasamh Se, in which she played the idealistic Bani. She then participated in the reality show Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa 2. Though she was eliminated, she got back on the show through a wildcard entry and went on to win by gaining a tremendous amount of public votes. She struck lucky again with her debut film Rock On, which became a major hit. Presently, she has finished shooting for her film Life Partner with Tusshar Kapoor, Govinda and Genelia D’Souza. She will soon start shooting for Ekta Kapoor’s next movie Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, with Emraan Hashmi. The film is said to be based on Haji Mustan’s life. |

Sourabhee Debbarma: After three seasons of the boys taking the top spot on Indian Idol, Sourabhee broke the trend and because season 4’s winner. The cute girl from the North East proved to be one of the most promising and versatile performers from day one. Although she was not trained formally in singing, she managed to win the audience’s hearts with her powerful voice. Recently, she released her first album titled Meherbaan, which featured two original songs and covers of her favourite tracks. She even released a video in which she looked the perfect rock star. Sourabhee was last seen performing on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3. |

Aishwarya Mujmdar: With her beautiful voice, 14-year-old Aishwarya won Chhote Ustaad last year. Always a judges’ favourite, Aishwarya began her training from the time she was 3-years-old. She has participated in many competitions and won numerous awards. Mujmdar has recorded songs for Gujrati movies and albums as well as performed with singers such as Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal during live shows. She also managed to host dance reality show Nach Baliye 4 while simultaneously completing her education and practicing her singing. |

Vaishali Made: The first married contestant to win Marathi Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was Vaishali, who took part last year. She then directly went on to participate in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009. Vaishali was a student of Himesh Reshmmiya, who helped her gain popularity. She won the show and is now working on her album. She has already sung a track for the Marathi soap Kalat Nakalat, recorded for Marathi films and has been busy with live shows. It is her dream to work with A. R. Rahman someday. |
