Default Kalki: Anurag is a puppy dog!

If the new age Devdas is wild, his Chardramukhi aka Chanda is even wilder. Victim of a sleazy MMS scandal she finds refuge in a brothel. With lots of easy cash and substance at her disposal the high society escort Chanda is a far cry from the role immortalised by Vijayantimala and Madhuri Dixit. We spoke to Kalki Koechlin who is essaying this part in Anurag Kashyap's Dev.D. And she made some sizlling revelations about her professional and personal life.

How different are Chanda and Chandramukhi? You certainly won't be dancing to classical tunes in vintage Calcutta.

Well I guess the main difference is that Chanda has a life outside the brothel. She is of course very glamorous and ***y. You can say she is the ultimate male fantasy. But Chanda also has a normal daytime life, where she is studying and getting on with a regular routine. By night she becomes this high society call girl.

But Chandramukhi in the original is shown as a ********** with a heart of gold. Is Chanda as sacrificing?

No. Chanda in Dev.D is not apologetic about anything. She is just the way she is, living life on her terms. So there is no moral high ground to her character.

Devdas comes to Chandramukhi looking for love. What links Dev.D to Chanda?

For the first time Dev meets his match in Chanda. She is a strong woman who is also very stubborn about her opinions. Maybe that quality attracts Dev to Chanda. In a way Chanda is a lot like Dev. Both are at some level not sure of themselves.

Where is your character set?

It's in a huge brothel where I have my own room. It's a very well set up one for her customers and one of the most in demand.

Tell us something about the lust line which has been set up.

The lust line was obviously very controversial. I had to record my voice in various languages for this ***-chat phone line. As long as it helps in the film's promotion I have no issues. It doesn't affect me personally. For me it's my work. When the need arises I become Chanda for the film.
