Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an esteemed academic who had a master’s degree in philosophy. He wrote a book called ‘The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore’. Radhakrishnan managed to bring worldwide attention to Indian philosophy with his academic work. He served as a renowned teacher at the Chennai’s Presidency College and Calcutta University for a long time. Then, Dr. Radhakrishnan became the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra Pradesh University. He held this position for 5 years. He taught Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford University for 16 years. Later, he became the President of India in 1962 and since then we are celebrating his birthday as Teacher’s Day.

Significance of Teacher’s Day
The sole motto behind celebrating September 5 as Teacher’s Day is to remember and acknowledge the significant role of teachers in shaping students’ lives and careers. Though we say that the future of a country lies in the hands of its children, it won’t become possible if there won’t be good teachers to show the right path to the students. A teacher’s job is full of hardships and therefore, we must honour them with respect and show gratitude for their efforts. This is the least we can do for those who prepare us to face the world in the best way possible.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan dedicated his life to education and the youth of the country

Teachers’ Day: People across India celebrate Teachers’ Day on September 5. The day is dedicated to teachers, mentors, and gurus who guide us to be a better human being as well as make us a learned student. But did you know, why do we celebrate this day? It is the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an exemplary teacher and former President of India. Dr Sarvepalli dedicated his life to education and the youth of the country. “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day,” he had said, and henceforth, the tradition to celebrate Teachers’ Day started from 1962 and to honour him and the teachers across the country. On Teachers’ Day, celebrations are held in schools and colleges, thanking them for firming the academic grounds of children. Various educational institutions give teachers a day’s rest while students arrange various events for them. Usually, teachers are presented with cards and flowers on this day.

Born on September 5, 1888, in a middle-class family in Tirutani, Sarvepalli was an incredible student who studied philosophy at Christian College in Madras. Born into a Telegu family, he held a stark record in academics ever since he was young. Radhakrishnan played into almost all fields of social sciences.

He was a passionate teacher and his teaching career spanned for many years. He taught at Chennai’s Presidency College and Calcutta University; then he became the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra Pradesh University, Delhi University as well as the Banaras Hindu University. In 1936, he was called by Oxford to teach the subject ‘Eastern Religions and Ethics’. He taught there for about 16 years.

In 1947, when India achieved its independence, Dr Sarvepalli represented India at UNESCO (1946–52) and was later declared Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union, from 1949 to 1952. He was also elected to the Constituent Assembly of India. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1952. In 1954, he received the German ‘Order pour le Merite for Arts and Science’ and in 1961, the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.

In 1952, Dr Sarvepalli was appointed as the first Vice President of India. Then, in 1962, he was appointed as the President of free India. He is touted to be one of the most distinguished twentieth-century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy. He passed away on April 16, 1975, in Chennai. कैसे हुई थी शिक्षक दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत?
एक बार छात्रों के एक समूह से भारत के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति डॉ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन से उनका जन्मदिन मनाने की अनुमति मांगी . इस पर डॉ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन ने अपना जन्मदिन अलग से मनाने के बजाय, 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाए तो यह मेरे सौभाग्य की बात होगी. उसके बाद 1962 से भारत में 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाने लगा.

कौन थे डॉ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन?
डॉ. राधाकृष्णन का जन्म एक मध्य वर्गीय परिवार में हुआ था. ऐसा माना जाता है कि राधाकृष्ण के पिता चाहते थे कि उनका बेटा अंग्रेजी ना सीखे और मंदिर का पुजारी बन जाए. डॉक्टर राधाकृष्णन अपने पिता की दूसरी संतान थे. उनके चार भाई और एक छोटी बहन थी छः बहन-भाईयों और दो माता-पिता को मिलाकर आठ सदस्यों के इस परिवार की आय बहुत कम थी. भारत के पहले उपराष्ट्रपति और दूसरे राष्ट्रपति सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन को बचपन में कई प्रकार की कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ा. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का शुरुआती जीवन तिरुतनी और तिरुपति जैसे धार्मिक स्थलों पर ही बीता. डॉक्टर सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन भारतीय संस्कृति के ज्ञानी,एक महान शिक्षाविद,महान दार्शनिक,महान वक्ता होने के साथ ही विज्ञानी हिन्दू विचारक भी थे. राधाकृष्णन ने अपने जीवन के 40 वर्ष एक शिक्षक के रूप में बिताए.
