  • Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is an Indian version of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing and ABC's Dancing with the Stars.

Concept

  • Sony Entertainment Television brings "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa" with new celebrities and well known faces to perform with professional dance partners on a highly competitive stage. The show is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions in India.
  • The show's format is taken from the Strictly Come Dancing show on BBC One in UK, which has been a huge success in over 30 countries like America, Australia, New Zealand, and Italy where it is known as Dancing with the Stars. However the Indian version has been extensively remodelled as to appeal to the country's viewers.
  • The dances are typically more exuberant than on its sister programmes around the world, owing to India's unique Bollywood traditions. Also because of the strong Bollywood approach, India is the only country to not have live music with an in-house Big Band. The show is also pre-recorded unlike the UK's Strictly Come Dancing and other spin-offs. All the ballroom and latin dances are danced as bollywood themed showdances (US: freestyles) rather than with strict 'syllabus' ballroom or latin technique.
  • The first four seasons of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa were aired on Sony TV. From its fifth season it has been airing on Colors TV. 10th season airing on voot from July.

  • Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 1 is the first season of the dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. It premiered on 7 September 2006 until 4 November 2006.The first season was judged by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shilpa Shetty and Farah Khan. The season was hosted by Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puran Singh. The winners are Mona Singh.
  • Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2 is the second season of the dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. It premiered on 28 September 2007 until 15 December 2007. Shiamak Davar, Urmila Matondkar and Jeetendra were the judges. Rohit Roy and Mona Singh were the hosts. Prachi Desai and Deepak were the winners.
  • In third season Saroj Khan replaced Shiamak, Juhi Chawla replaced Urmila and Vaibhavi Merchant replaced Jeetendra. Firstly Shiv Panditt replaced Rohit Roy but later Rohit Roy replaced him and Shweta Tiwari replaced Mona Singh. Bhaichung Bhutia and Sonia are the winners.
  • In fourth season Remo D'Souza replaced Saroj Khan, Madhuri Dixit replaced Juhi Chawla and Malaika Arrora replaced Vaibhavi. Sumeet Raghvan replaced Rohit and Mona Singh replaced Shweta. Meiyang Chang & Marischa are the winners.

  • The seventh season was judged by Karan Johar, Madhuri Dixit and Remo D'souza. It was hosted by Ranvir Shorey and Drashti Dhami who was later replaced by Manish Paul. Maksim Chmerkovskiy was a guest judge for two weeks. Ashish Sharma & Shampa are the winners.
  • The eighth season was judged by Karan Johar, Shahid Kapoor, Lauren Gottlieb, Ganesh Hegde and Malaika Arora Khan (replaced Karan Johar). It was hosted by Manish Paul. Faisal Khan & Vaishnavi are the winners.
  • The ninth season was started on 30 July 2016. Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ganesh Hegde took over as the judges of this season. Manish Paul hosted the show yet again. Teriya Magar and Aryan Patra are the winner.

Judges' Fury over Public Voting
The public voting for the Semi-finals had resulted in duo Karan Singh Grover and Nicole Alvares, the lowest scorer of the round, being sent into the Finale and Gauhar Khan and Hard Kaur for the face off. After a unanimous decision in favour of Gauhar Khan, Hard Kaur was set to leave the show after her performance, prepared for the finale. Her performance made the judges display their resentment over the biased voting of the public in the form of a 'strike' till Hard Kaur is brought back. The judges returned the very next episode with Hard Kaur's elimination being inevitable.

Day before yesterday Source had reported about the first two contestants in extremely popular faces Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande aka Manav - Archana being signed on for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4.

Now if the list of contenders already boasts of some top faces from the industry, the judging panel has to have an even more expressive line up. Keeping in mind the standard and popularity of the show, the makers have approached superstar Govinda famous for his swift dance moves. Madhuri Dixit too has been approached to adjudicate the show.

Informs a source, "We are in talks with Govinda and Madhuri Dixit to judge the show which is slated to launch in the first week of December. In all likelihood they will give their nod of approval to the show. For a dance reality show who better than Madhuri and Govinda as judges."

We sent a text message to both Govinda and business head Sony Entertainment Television, Ajit Thakur, to which they didn't revert. Govinda had earlier hosted Sony's Jeeto Chappar Phaad Ke two years ago.

1] Season 1 Winner: Mona Jaswir Singh and Toby (2006)

Sony Entertainment channel aired the first-ever Jhalak Dikhla Jaa on 7 September 2006. Mona emerged victories of the first-ever dancing show in the country.

The star of successful television show Jassi announced as the winner on 4 November 2006. The host of the show Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puran Singh rocked the stage with their presence.

In 2018, she completed Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain (web series) & Yeh Meri Family (web series). Currently, she is playing the role of Simran in Yeh Teri Galiyan aired on Zee Entertainment Channel.

2] Season 2 Winner: Prachi Desai and Deepak Singh (2007)


The demand for the show increased by next year and the production prepared for it. The season two of JDJ started on 28 September 2007 on Sony Entertainment channel. Prachi Desai emerged as the winner of the S2, and she was a successful television celebrity during that period.

Desai shifted her focus from television daily soaps to movies, and she was able to bag many leading roles in the way. Prachi debuted in Rock On (2008 film), and she is filming for Kosha expected to release in 2019.

3] Season 3 Winner: Baichung Bhutia and Sonia Jaffer (2009)


The production took two years to gather the popular celebrities for the season three. The production team changed the host and replaced with Shiv Pandit and Shweta Tiwari. The season three started on 27 February 2009 and the winner announced on 31 May 2009. Bhatia is a professional football player, and he represented India on many occasions.Currently, Baichung managing Sikkim Football team and he established a new political party called “Hamro Sikkim Party.”

4] Season 4 Winner: Meiyang Chang and Marischa Fernandes (2011)

The immense popularity and ratings of the show inspired the team to work on another season. On 12 December 2010, the JDJ S3 aired on Sony Entertainment Television. Chang is a popular face in Indian television after making an appearance in Indian Idol. Meiyang announced as the winner of the S4 on 6 March 2011. Chang dubbed “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” and he played the character of “Jimmy Woo.” Meiyang is also working as hosts for the shows and guest appearance for television shows.

5] Season 5 Winner: Gurmeet Choudhary and Shampa Sonthalia (2012)



The production team sold the rights to the Colors TV, and Sony Entertainment Television did not have a slot for the season. The JDJ season five aired on Colors TV from 16 June 2012, and it ended on 30 September 2012.

The show increased the number of contestants from 12 to 16 and Choudhary emerged as the winner of the S5. Gurmeet is a popular daily soap celebrity, and he worked in television shows & movies.Choudhary did not sign a new movie or television show in 2018. However, he attends award functions and makes an appearance on television shows as guest host.

6] Season 6 Winner: Drashti Dhami and Salman Yusuff (2013)

The team of JDJ arranged an excellent Jodi’s for the television celebrities and the season six started on 1 June 2013. The S6 had toughest contestants from the television and dancing field as well. On 14 September 2013, the judges announced Dhami as the winner of season six. Drashti was shooting a daily soap show, and she was also practicing every week to win the title. Currently, she is playing the role of Nandini in Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka aired on Colors TV.

Dhami appeared in Big Boss 12 as a guest. In 2018 Dance Deewane dance reality show invited Drasti on the show. A talking show invited her along with Nakuul Mehta in Episode 7 of “A Table For Two” as a guest.

7] Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 7 Winner: Ashish Sharma (2014)



Jhalak Dikhla Jaa season seven aired on 7 June 2014 on Colors TV with the host Ranvir Shorey. Although, S7 has Maksim Chmerkovskiy as a judge for two weeks in a row. “Love *** Aur Dhokha” star emerged victories at the end of the season.

Currently, he is playing the leading role of Prithvi Vallabh television show aired on Sony TV. Sharma did not sign any movie since 2012, but he is very active in reality shows and Indian television shows. JDJ season seven winner Sharma had the support of choreographer Shampa Sonthalia.

8] Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 8 Winner: Faisal Khan (2015)

Khan is the winner of the season eight of JDJ, he is the winner of “Dance India Dance Li’l Masters 2”, and he is only 19. The S8 of Jhalak started on 11 July 2015, and it ended on 10 October 2015 with the winner Khan.

In 2016, Faisal participated in Khatron Ke Khiladi S7 and Tuyul & Mba Yul Reborn as contestant and guest. However, Khan could not take the Fear Factor title to the home, and he lost to better men & women in the show.

Khan travels around the globe to perform on bigger stages, and he accepts special invites to appear on television shows. Khan is a promised talent in the Bollywood industry, and he is aiming to become a choreographer.

9] Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 9 Winner: Teriya Magar (2016-17)
On 30 July 2016, the production team was ready to start the show, and Magar was the winner of S9. On 21 January 2017, the winner announced by the judges and the young talent took the title home.

The young lady defeated two talented dancers Salman Yusuff Khan and Shantanu Maheshwari in the finale. Teriya is honoured with “Lumbini Peace Ambassador” by the local committee. The Deputy Prime Minister presented the award for Local Development.

Currently, Magar accepting dancing shows invites and performances. She is focusing on education as well and planning to pursue higher education.
