Default Zee TV regains second slot in Hindi viewership space

ZEE TV has regained the second position in the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) space in the week 51 (December 14 to 20),

TAM media research data on C&S 4+, Hindi speaking markets. But, Zee TV hasn’t managed to topple Colors from the second spot as both channels share the position, while Star Plus continues to occupy the leadership slot.

Zee TV and Colors both have a channel share of 20% each. Zee TV’s channel share increased to 20% from 17% in the previous week with its gross rating points (GRP) touching 230 from last week’s 194. Colors’ channel share marginally fell to 20% from 21% in the previous week and its GRP stood at 233, down from 235. GRP is a standard industry measure of viewership.

The relative channel share of Star Plus registered a marginal 1% increase to 25% from 24% in the previous week. It stands at 292 GRPs, up from 272 in the previous week.

Zee TV’s bounce back can be attributed to the film Taare Zameen Par, which was telecast on December 14. The film gained third spot on the list of top 10 programmes with its GRP being 5.25. Bidayi, the Star Plus show continues to be the most watched with 7.76 GRPs and Balika Vadhu is the second most-watched with 7.49 GRP.

“We are pleased to see the increase in ratings. Taare Zameen Par attracted significant viewer interest. Apart from that, a few of our other shows also contributed to this improvement. We did well across most of the Hindi speaking belt, Maharashtra and Bengal. We are hoping to sustain this performance,” says a spokesperson for Zee Entertainment Enterprises.

New shows that were launched in the last few weeks on Star Plus and Colors have also found their way to the top 10 list of programmes. Uttaran on Colors and Aap Ki Kachehri Kiran Ke Saath on Star Plus stand fifth and sixth, respectively. All the other GECs maintained the same market share with GRPs fluctuating marginally. Sony Entertainment channel stands third with 8% channel share, Star One is fourth with 7% share, NDTV Imagine is fifth with 6% share.

9X, which is largely running repeat programming, has 4% channel share, same as SAB and Sahara One. Star Utsav and DD1 have 2% relative channel share each.
