Muslims in India will look for the crescent moon this evening. The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan. Muslims in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries of the Indian sub-continent will keep an eye out for the crescent moon this evening. If the moon is sighted today, the first fast will be observed in India on May 6 (Monday) otherwise May 7 (Tuesday). Unlike the Gregorian calendar followed by the West, the Islamic calendar is lunar that is, based on the moon. Since lunar months are shorter than solar months, Muslims holy month of Ramadan, which takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic year, occurs approximately 11 days earlier every year depending on when the moon is sighted and hence, varying from country to country by about a day.

♦ Kerala to begin Ramzan a day ahead of rest of India. ANI tweeted, “Month of Ramzan to be observed from tomorrow in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka after District Qazi Twaka Ahmad Musliyar announced the sighting of moon at Kappad Beach in Kozhikode (Kerala) today.”
♦ New moon is not sighted today. Hence, the first day of Ramzan will be observed on May 7 (Tuesday).
♦ Syed Ahmed Bukhari of Jama Masjid Delhi said in a statement that no moon sighting report from any part of India has been received.
♦ The moon sighting committees in India have begun meeting in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. The meeting began shortly after Maghrib prayers today evening. A formal announcement is expected at any moment now.
♦ The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in Pakistan will start meeting after a short while.
♦ The National Moon Sighting Committee of Bangladesh will hold a meeting on May 6 (Monday). The official announcement about the meeting has been announced through a press release issued by Islamic Foundation Sunday evening.
♦ Official decision by Central Moon Sighting Committee New Delhi, Central Moon Sighting Committee Pakistan, Religious Affairs Ministry Bangladesh is expected after Salate Maghrib

♦ The moon sighting committees in India will declare the last day of fasting, that is the day of Eid, in the same manner on the 28th or 29th evening of fasting after the crescent moon is sighted post the Maghrib prayer.
♦ In India this year, Ramadan is expected to begin from May 5 or May 6, as per the sighting of the crescent moon.
♦ Depending on the moon cycle, the period will last 29 or 30 days which means that the holy month will draw to a close on June 4 or June 5.
♦ Muslims all over the world will be observing a fast from dawn to dusk during these 29 or 30 days of Ramadan.
Given this prediction, the crescent moon will reportedly be sighted on May 5 around 2.46 am (UAE) which means that the first fast will be observed on May 6. The moon sighting committees in India and Saudi Arabia will also declare the last day of fasting, that is the day of Eid, in the same manner on the 28th or 29th evening of fasting after the crescent moon is sighted post the Maghrib prayer.
According to Muslim beliefs, it was during Ramadan, precisely on the night of Laylat al-Qadr that the Quran was first revealed to mankind. The Night of Power or Laylat al-Qadr as it is called, was the night when the word of Allah is said to have been revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
