Default The real big boss

Channel heads of atleast two top channels must have been gnawing at their finger nails last night. As some eyes were glued to Colors with the launch of its big ticket show Bigg Boss 3 there were many SRK fans who switched on to Star Plus to catch the superstar being grilled by Farah Khan on Tere Mere Beach Mein. And all of Sunday news channels kept plugging in both the shows by referring to the shows as a war between two titans- Amitabh Bachchan (who hosts Bigg Boss) and SRK. We have witnessed stars battle it out on a Friday when their films release but never ever on TV. What was intriguing was the fact that a 67 year- old legend and a 42 year- old superstar were fighting for the attention of viewers of the small screen. This speaks so much of the power of this medium.

Coming to the respective shows. Let me begin with Bigg Boss3. As Amitabh Bachchan unveiled one inmate after the other the initial reaction to the names was ‘thanda! ’ With names like Ismail Darbar (who is in the news for the first time since his ‘pregnant’ pause after the Poonam Jatau saga), German pin-up babe Claudia Ciesla ( for the average Indian viewer will she offer anything more than Sherlyn?), Jaya Sawant (to white wash her image tarnished by daughter Rakhi?), Poonam Dhillon (to further political aspirations?), Aditi Govitrikar (post her divorce), Kamal Khan, (who dat?) , Vindoo( who till now is only referred to as Dara Singh’s beta), Tanaaz-Bhaktiyar (for the want of any kind of work) one can’t predict what the future of this show will be. As for funny man Raju Shrivastav he is way past his prime and no body is interested. The only masala that is expected is from Sherlyn Chopra who will spice up the show a la her predecessors Rakhi, Kashmera, Payal and Sambhavana. And probably if big sis Shilpa has given the right gyan to Shamita then she may say the right things and make the perfect moves. But if all fails then just wait for the weekly fix from ‘pop philosopher.’

On the other 9pm show it was Shah Rukh Khan who brought down the curtain on the current season of Tere mere beach mein. And the superstar as usual did not disappoint. The actor has such a superb sense of humour that he is a pleasure to watch. More over when it’s a close buddy who is interviewing, the subject is so much at ease that it definitely brings out the best in him. And SRK was surely at his witty best. What better way to end a show?

And finally I saw the new Balaji show Bairi Piya. That brings the total of the currently-on-air farmer-centric shows to three. Balika Vadhu, Agle Janam…, Bairi piya. And one more in the offing. Sunjoy Waddhwa is working on a show based on the life of farmers. If the Government paid as much heed to the poor farmers they would not be poor any longer.

And lastly if the buzz that Preity Zinta’s name (who will be hosting a chat show) will now be added to the laundry list of big screen celebs making their small screen debut is true, the game only got bigger. TV is now the real big boss. Whoa!
