Anurag Kashyap: Black Friday
We don't know if science lost its favourite son, but filmmaking has surely gained one. For a director who wanted to be a scientist in his early career, Anurag Kashyap's 'Black Friday' was every reason to make audiences believe that he had settled for the right profession. The 2004 cinema traces events of a decade ago that left a smoldering hole in educated India's psyche - the 1993 Mumbai bombings. The film recreates the intense feelings that followed the blasts and successfully showed the religious fissures developing behind the façade of urban, economically progressive and secular India. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and was a nominee for the Best Film (Golden Leopard) award at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Anusha Rizvi: Peepli Live
Will Natha die? Debutante director Anusha Rizvi's tongue-in-cheek look at the serious issue of farmers' suicide left a lump in the throat of the most skeptic cinemagoers. The comic satire made a star of Naya Theatre company member Omkar Das Manikpuri who plays landless farmer Natha in the film whose helplessness mirrors that of millions others in India’s rural hinterlands

Farhan Akhtar: Dil Chahta Hai
The trend-setting urban fable 'Dil Chahta Hai', Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut, was a leap from Bollywood's usual rich boy-meets-poor-girl saga. It defined the way the hip, cool and rich youth of the twenty-first century loved, argued and bantered. Akhtar grabbed the pulse of the over 20-something audiences for a film that marked actor Saif Ali Khan’s cinematic revival.

Kamal Amrohi: Mahal
'Mahal' not just marked the beginning of Kamal Amrohi's career but also India's suspense genre that badly needed a revival. The film was brilliantly different for its times and raked up a storm in the cinemagoing public, unaccustomed to seeing thrillers. Mahal was among the earlier efforts to improve not only the content but also the form of Hindi films with rich visuals, imaginative use of sound and haunting music.
