In pics: Indian Cinema's First Times
 Alam Ara Since the inception of cinema it has gone through drastic changes with every new discovery we make. Today we celebrate the 80th anniversary of sound in films. Let's take a trip down memory lane and record every time Indian cinema created a new benchmark. 80 years ago, director Ardeshir Irani produced the first Indian movie with sound. He filmed past midnight to avoid unwanted sounds. Irani made the first Indian talkie Alam Ara and released it on March 14th 1931.

 Raja Harishchandra This film is the first Indian full-length motion picture produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. 'Raja Harishchandra' (1913) is a silent film in Marathi. Apparently all the female characters in the film were also played by male actors.

 Kisan Kanya The film 'Kisan Kanya' (1937) is recorded to be the first Indian colour film. It was directed by Moti B. Gidvani and produced by Ardeshir Irani.

 Ek Anek Aur Ekta This social film, 'Ek Anek Aur Ekta' was the first Indian animation short film made. Featuring on Doordarshan, it was used for educational purposes. The film was intended to teach the value of unity and teamwork to children.

 Pratidwandi Satyajit Ray pioneered some experimental techniques in filmmaking. He was the first Indian director to introduce photo-negative flashbacks and X-ray digressions in his film 'Pratidwandi' (1972). This Bengali film is based on the novel written by Sunil Gangopadhyay.
