What happened to Shikhar Dhawan in the India v Australia match? | World Cup 2019

India v Australia - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019
The Indian cricket team are now fretting over Shikhar Dhawan's fitness after the southpaw suffered a thumb injury during the team's second match of the World Cup against Australia.
It was the first ball of the ninth over, wherein Pat Cummins' back of a length delivery was misjudged by Shikhar Dhawan. The ball rose up higher than Dhawan expected it to and as a result, he got hit on his left thumb while trying to play it with a straight bat.

Dhawan received medication from the Indian team's physio Patrick Farhart. The opening batsman seemed to be in discomfort even after that but he continued to bat and went on to score a fantastic century. His masterful 117-run knock helped India notch up a daunting 352/5. India eventually won the match by 36 runs and Dhawan bagged the 'Player of the Match' award.

While it was expected that Dhawan might not be available for India's next game, recent reports have indicated a worrying picture for the key batsman. He is suspected to have sustained a hairline fracture on his left thumb. Dhawan is widely reported to be out for a period of three weeks or at the very least, India's next two games against New Zealand and Pakistan.

Since, it is unlikely that Dhawan will be ruled out for the entire World Cup, India are not expected to name a replacement for him. For the time being, KL Rahul looks the obvious replacement for Dhawan at the top of the order.

Vijay Shankar or Dinesh Karthik will come in to the side fill in the No. 4 position.
India will hope that Dhawan will be able to return to action quickly given his impeccable record in ICC tournaments. India's main strength also revolves around the top 3 in their batting order, consisting of Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

The team management are expected to give an exact update on Shikhar Dhawan's injury later in the day..

World Cup 2019: Rishabh Pant reportedly to replace injured Shikhar Dhawan

Rishabh Pant
What's the story?

Hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been reported to be the replacement for injured Shikhar Dhawan in the World Cup.

In case you didn't know

Shikhar Dhawan was hit on the left thumb by a bouncer bowled by Pat Cummins in the match vs Australia. Now reports have emerged that Shikhar Dhawan will be ruled out for at least three weeks. This long layoff will allow the team management to name a replacement for the dashing opener.

Heart of the matter

A source who is very close to the developments told Times of India that the injury of Shikhar Dhawan is a huge blow for the Indian team and has left the management, scratching their heads. The source claimed that the team management will put forward a request for a replacement as soon as they get details regarding the injury. The source revealed that the replacement is going to be Rishabh Pant.

“Once all the details on Dhawan’s injury are out, the team management will put out an official request for a replacement. And that replacement is going to be Pant. The injury is bad enough to ask for a replacement,”
the source said.
There are reports that KL Rahul can move up from the middle order to open the innings. Rishabh Pant can thus fill the role vacated by Rahul in the middle order.
“KL Rahul would move up the order and open the innings with Rohit Sharma, while Pant could be slotted in at No. 4. But that’s pretty much like thinking aloud now. We’ll weigh these options carefully,” the source added.
KL Rahul has a lot of experience of opening the batting in both IPL and International cricket. Rishabh Pant can be a great option in the middle order as he can move the game forward.

What's next?

Shikhar Dhawan is a great player, so it is obvious that India will miss him but this is an opportunity for others to rise to the occasion and make their mark.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: India opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan will not return to India and that is official. After Dhawan got ruled out for three weeks following a thumb fracture, talks were about who would be replacing the southpaw. As of now, it seems the rumours have been put to rest and Dhawan will continue to stay in the UK and would be under observation and would be monitored. “Team India opening batsman Mr Shikhar Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored,” read BCCI’s official statement.

BCCI has not approached the ICC as of now looking for a replacement. India has already won their first two matches against big teams and look good to make it to the semi-finals. Dhawan would be fit in three weeks and that would mean he would be available to play against Bangladesh and if India makes the semis, he would be there. He is in good form and that is what makes things a little worrying from an Indian point of view.

Team India will be playing New Zealand in their next match on June 13 before the big Pakistan tie. Dhawan will certainly not be playing the next game. The nature of the fracture remains unknown. If it is a hairline fracture, he could be back soon but if it is a regular fracture then things change.
