The Day 8 of Navratri festival is devoted to Maa Mahagauri, the eighth manifestation of Goddess Durga. Sharad Navaratri which began on September 21, 2017, will last until September 29. After the reverence of all nine forms of Maa Durga, the tenth day will witness grand celebrations of Vijayadashami and Dussehra festival on September 30. Coming back to the Mahagauri Puja on Ashtami tithi – it is considered one of the most auspicious dates during Navratri. On the same day, Durga Ashtami also known as Maha Ashtami will be celebrated. The name Mahagauri means extremely white. She is described to be pristine white in colour and very beautiful. Due to her fair complexion Goddess Mahagauri is compared with the conch, the moon and the white flower of Kunda. She is depicted wearing white coloured clothes only because of that Devi Mahagauri is also known as Shwetambardhara. Just like Goddess Shailaputri, this avatar of Maa Shakti is also depicted mounting a bull, because of which she is also known as Vrisharudha. Devi Mahagauri is shown having four hands. She carries Trishul in one right hand and keeps the second right hand in Abhaya Mudra. She adorns Damaru (tambourine) in the one left hand and keeps the second left hand in Varada Mudra to give divine blessings to her devotees.
