Thumbs up Cheesy new role: Coronation Street's Sean Wilson opens his own stall at Manchester ma

He's best known as Gail's hapless husband Martin Platt in Coronation Street - but now actor Sean Wilson has swapped Betty's hotpot to make his own cheese.
Lancashire native Sean set up his Saddleworth Cheese Company only last year, but almost instantly won three gongs at the 2009 British Cheese Awards.
But now he's taking his Lancashire dairy products to the masses of Manchester and not just the connoisseurs.

Cheese the main man: Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt in Coronation Street for more than 20 years, makes a point with a prospective customer to buy his Lancashire cheese

Big cheese: Sean asks some dairy lovers if they'd like a bit of How's Yer Father

The artisan cheesemaker was spotted at the weekend manning his stall in St Annes Square, and according to onlookers, had the busiest pitch on the market.

The former soap stalwart was selling his own varieties, which include Lancashire creamy How's Yer Father, tasty Mouth Almighty, Muldoon's Picnic - an English Lancashire crumbly - and blue cheese Smelly Apeth, all made himself with local milk.

They're also available at Harvey Nichols in the city centre, as well as at a host of delis and farm shops not just in the region, but around the country.

Sean's not the first celebrity to turn to the art of turning cow juice into solid stuff however - Blur bassist Alex James has been churning out the likes of Little Wallop goats' cheese for five years.

As for Sean, after leaving Corrie, Sean appeared in shows including Waterloo Road, Casualty and Dancing on Ice, but it was his love of food that steered his career away from television.

The 45-year-old was famous for playing Gail's nurse husband, after they got together in 1990 after her husband Brian was ******ed.

They got married in 1991 and had son David, but split after Martin had two affairs, and Gail went on to marry serial ****er Richard Hillman.

Sean last appeared on our screens in November 2005 after his affair with schoolgirl Katy Harris turned to tragedy, but he remains a familiar face to many - not least the people of Lancashire who've become fans of his dairy products.

Cheesy does it: Sean as Martin Platt in a Coronation Street storyline that saw his character go on a caravanning holiday with wife Gail, Sally Webster and the Battersbys
