Default 6 Hot apps for your smartphone

Tech pundits are fond of saying this that this is the era of the smartphone - devices that have impressive specifications (fast processors, large screens and operating systems like Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile).

While that may be true to an extent, the fact is that a good non-smartphone or ‘feature phone’ is also capable of doing a lot more. Just try out these apps on your phone and see it grow smarter in front of your eyes, without paying a penny.

Perhaps the most innovative mobile software product of recent times, Opera Mini is an Internet browser that works on most phones and lets you surf the Web almost as you would on your computer - no boring WAP sites. The browser shrinks Web pages into a format that can be displayed on a smaller screen, compresses the amount of data sent, and lets you see websites the way they are meant to be.

You also have features like tabbed browsing and the option to synchronise bookmarks between your phone browser and mobile browser - features not available on browsers of many smartphones.

Google Maps is excellent, but it tends to work best on smartphones. Other good map software generally comes with a price tag attached. So, if you have a feature phone with GPS and need maps, try out Mobile GMaps which is compatible with most handsets. It displays maps from different sources like Yahoo! Maps, Ask.com and Windows Live Local to serve up a very decent experience on most handsets.

If you have always envied the push mail access that smartphone users have, grab Emoze, a free e-mail service that notifies you the moment a mail arrives in your inbox. It works on just about every phone that can access the Internet. It supports almost all popular Webmail clients (Gmail, Yahoo! Mail) and even lets you configure your office mail account on it.

You can download and view attachments, view HTML mail and get updates from Facebook and Orkut. All of this with security that we’ve never heard complaints about. A must-have, we think.

If you like nothing better than being always-connected to chat, then this is the application for you. It lets you log into a number of popular instant messaging (IM) services like MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk and AIM, and even lets you make calls over Skype and keep in touch with your friends on Facebook. You can even swap photos and files with your friends who are online.
