Default Ghajini grosses Rs 2 billion at the box office

Aamir Khan’s latest film has become one of the greatest hits by grossing Rs 2 billion at the box office. Ghajini has broken many past records. Going by the two weeks collection at the box office this is the largest ever collection of any Bollywood movie in the country.

There were signs that the film will achieve unbelievably high success due to the theme and the work that was put in not only by Aamir Khan but the whole star cast of the film.

Every one gave 100 percent. Films like Ghajini are made once in many years and the success it has achieved will put the bar very high for others to follow.

The film was to open in Pakistan and given the high popularity of Aamir Khan, it is sure to be as big hit if not bigger as it has been in India. The film has done brisk business in overseas market as well.

A Bollywood insider Taran Adarsh who knows he pulse of the Indian film industry says, “the movie’s box office collections are huge. The two other movies that I can remember with similar success are Gadar and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”.

The big hits of recent times like Singh is Kinng and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi pale in popularity and box office collections when compared to the Aamir Khan and Asin film.

In territory after territory, the film has established records of sorts in popularity and box office collection.

Its overseas collection is one of the highest so far for any Aamir Khan film. Aamir Khan is not known to have a great fan following like Shah Rukh Khan when it comes to fans in hundreds of thousands in Europe, US and the Middle East.

But this film has won accolades and has given him a good harvest in the form of god box office collections. Industry pundits say that the box office collection of the film has crossed US $ 6 million by the end of second week.

Though the film had some competition from Shah Rukh Khan starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and also from Akshay Kumar’s last big release Singh is King when it came to box office collections, but Ghajini certainly has the last laugh.

Estimates say that the film is on its way to be the greatest hit of Bollywood in terms of money it may gross. The film is poised to become first rupees one billion movie. But many say it may gross a lot more than many had initially believed.

This is a turnaround of sorts for the Bollywood at the end of the year. None of the industry stalwarts had expected that the last week of 2008 would change the fortunes of the industry with two big hits being released very close to each other.

Now the film insiders say that it is a myth that the Bollywood will ever see a recession. As the Aamir Khan starrer became the first Indian film to collect at least Rs100 crore in less than a week at the box office, analysts were already predicting that the film industry was recession-proof and that the success of Ghajini would pave the way for more aggressive marketing strategies for the multi-starrers of 2009.

Many say that releasing more than 1400 prints of the movie coupled with aggressive marketing was the secret behind the phenomenal success of Ghajini. “There’s no alternative but to cross the 1,400 benchmark. We will have to study how the prints for Ghajini were distributed and devise our strategy”, say Says Sajid Nadiadwala, producer of Kambakht Ishq.
