Default IPL 2: Biggest Controversies 2009

Warne caught drinking beer
Shane Warne, no stranger to controversies, went against the 'spirit' of the game when he decided to take a quick swig from a glass of beer offered by a fan when Team Jaipur was walking out to field against the Royal Challengers. Warne was on a high already because Jaipur had reduced RC to 50-5 before the strategy break. A few sips of beer simply added unnecessary controversy to a superb victory. Photo: Piyal Bhattacharjee

The ‘wild thing’ collapses
In a big blow to Rajasthan Royals’ title hopes, its strike bowler Kamran Khan was found guilty of suspect illegal bowling action. Khan will undergo a two-week rehabilitation programme. Just ahead of IPL 2, Shane Warne termed Khan a ‘Tornado’ or ‘Wild Thing’, who would leave a mark in the IPL. During the first few matches for Rajasthan, the rookie pacer created a big impact with his slinging action. Photo: AFP

Was KKR-RCB match fixed?
Knight Riders surprisingly dropped their top-run getter Australian Brad Hodge for the match against Royal Challengers. But Hodge, instead of sitting in the dressing room, was found in the hospitality box during the match. Knight Riders lost the match despite putting up a challenging 173-run target on board. The ICC has raised fears that matches in the IPL could be fixed. Photo: AFP

Multiple captains
When John Buchanan floated the idea of having multiple captains in Twenty20, it became a burning issue. The cricket manager of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) sparked a worldwide debate with his concept. The controversy did not die down and it eventually required KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan, to broker a truce. However, just before the start of its campaign, KKR management replaced Sourav Ganguly as the team captain with New Zealand’s wicket keeper Brendon McCullum. Photo AFP

Fake IPL player
An unknown blogger, who went by the name ‘Fake IPL Player’, claimed to be a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad and left its owner Shah Rukh Khan worried. The blogger ‘revealed’ information from team meetings to tension-filled nights out and caused a rift in the team dressing-room. It was a big hit worldwide, with Google Trends reporting a massive surge in hits. After KKR's last match, in a video post titled 'FIP RIP', a shadow declared himself to be the fake IPL player.
