World's Biggest Statue 'Statue of Unity' is the 597 feet high structure of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel 1/5 Image credit: Twitter 'Statue of Unity' is the 597 feet high structure of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat's Narmada district on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Located in Sadhu-Bet Island, Gujarat, the statue occupies over 20,000 square meters and is surrounded by a 12 square km artificial lake. The 182-metre structure of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is touted as the world's tallest. It is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the US. The total project cost is estimated to be Rs. 2,989 crore. The statue depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, wearing a traditional dhoti and shawl, towering over river Narmada. 2/5 Image credit: Twitter China’s Spring Temple Buddha: 420 feet high atop another 66 feet of pedestal. Built between 1997 and 2008, the massive copper Buddha stands atop a 66 foot tall lotus-shaped pedestal which houses a monastery, giving it a total height of 502 feet. The Spring Temple Buddha derives its name from the nearby Tianrui hot spring whose water, at 60 °C (140 °F), is renowned in the area for its curative properties. The Foquan Temple, built during the Tang dynasty, houses the Bell of Good Luck, placed on top of Dragon Head peak. This bronze bell weighs 116 tonnes. 3/5 Image credit: TwitterUshiku Daibutsu Tsukuba, Japan is 393 feet tall Ushiku Daibutsu, located south east of the city of Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture, is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest Buddhist statue in the world at 120m or equivalent to a 38-story building. The height of the giant, bronze statue includes the 10m high base and 10m high lotus platform. The Ushiku Daibutsu weighs an incredible 4000 tons and was built in 1993 to commemorate the birth of Shinran (1173-1263), the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Japanese Buddhism, with its HQ at the Honganji temples in Kyoto. Visitors can ride an elevator to the viewing gallery at 85m, from where there are incredbile views on a clear day as far as the Tokyo Skytree. 4/5 Image credit: TwitterStatue of Unity is nearly twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty, 305 feet with pedestal and foundation included The Statue of Liberty exhibit, which opened in July 1986 and is located on the second floor in the pedestal of the Statue, traces the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty through museum objects, photographs, prints, videos and oral histories. In addition to historical artifacts and descriptive text, full scale replicas of the Statue's face and foot are also on display. Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. Located in Volgograd, Russia, the 279-foot memorial was designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich and Nikolai Nikitin. In 1967, the Soviet Union dedicated a towering monument to one of its great World War II triumphs. Motherland is not fixed to her base, though, and seeping groundwater has caused the plinth to lean nearly eight inches. Russian officials worry that if she leans any further, she may topple. |
