According to popular hagiography, in 1963, Sathya Sai suffered a stroke and four severe heart attacks. But he is believed to have cured himself.

He has always proclaimed that he would be reborn as Prema Sai Baba in the state of Karnataka.

In 1968, Sathya Sai made his first and only trip overseas, to Uganda. He met with dictator Idi Amin and gave private interviews.

Sathya Sai was noted for materializing 'vibhuti' or sacred ash from thin air and distributing it to his followers, a move critiqued by rationalists as a magic trick.
