Default ICC to review umpire referral system, day-night Tests

Controversial umpiring referral system and the feasibility of holding day-night Tests will be on the anvil at the two-day meeting of International Cricket Council's cricket committee, beginning at Lord's on Monday.

The committee, headed by West Indian Clive Lloyd, will decide if the much-debated referral system, which allows either two or three unsuccessful appeals per innings, should be adopted permanently in international matches following trials in four Test series during the past nine months.

This was the first time players had been allowed to challenge a decision, although the two on-field umpires have always been able to consult one another and, for several years now, seek help from the television umpire.

The committee will also examine if the number of overall incorrect umpiring decisions were reduced during the trials, was there an undue negative influence on the pace of the game, was it fair to ask the players to request a referral, what was the effect on the umpires and was the authority of the on-field officials unduly compromised?

The meeting will also discuss if day/night Test matches was a way of reviving spectator's interest in the five-day format of the game in an age of Twenty20 cricket.

Their recommendations are due to be announced on Tuesday.

The committee's decision will be forwarded for approval to the ICC's Chief Executives Committee and their main board, slated to meet at Lord's from June 22-26.
