Photos/Review/Price/Cost/Features: BlackBerry Bold 9780

Check out our BlackBerry Bold 9780 review here. Did BlackBerry 6 OS and the integrated 5-megapixel camera impress? Read on to find out.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 Overview

Take the recently reviewed BlackBerry Style, convert it to a candybar style body by axing the clamshell with front LCD screen, and you have the BlackBerry Bold 9780 for T-Mobile. Just like the BlackBerry Style, the Bold 9780 sports the latest BlackBerry 6 OS, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and full QWERTY keyboard. BlackBerry 6 has brought many improvements to RIM's latest lineup of handsets, and the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is no different from the latest crop of speed demons.

Even though RIM is not attempting to bombard the capacitive touchscreen market with cavalcades of models that differentiate each other by minimal features, there is one thing that is certain—BlackBerry phones are reliable, exhibit excellent voice quality and battery life, and are well-built. We wouldn't think twice about snagging a Bold 9780 for T-Mobile or Style for Sprint in this touchscreen-laden wasteland that has become the majority of the consumer market. Besides, life without Brick Breaker is just not the same.

T-Mobile announced the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 on its US network last week.

The Bold 9780 is the first OS 6.0 device for T-Mobile. OS 6.0 delivers a smooth user interface with special attention to social networking apps. The improved web browser with tabs makes the internet an easy to use tool on this device.
The hardware includes a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, 512 MB RAM, a microSD memory card slot, 3G, and Wi-Fi connectivity. This version also supports Wi-Fi calling which really helps bolster T-Mobile’s network. The Bold 9780 comes standard with BlackBerry App World, connecting the user to thousands of mobile applications. The device also has the trackpad, with the four dedicated keys for phone, menu, return and end call/power on and off. The full size QWERTY key board with integrated dial pad eases input for messaging and dialing.

The new Blackberry Bold 9780 smartphone is not very different from its predecessor Bold 9700 in terms of look and features. So, what is in there for users on the new Blackberry Bold 9780? Is there a compelling reason for Blackberry 9700 users to upgrade to it? These are the questions that many might have been wondering about. Let's check out more details of what the new Blackberry Bold 9780 mobile phone offers.

Screen
The display on the new Bold 9780 is the same 2.44-inch TFT as the older 9700 with the same 480 x 360 resolution. The screen on both these devices are more pixel-packed than the first Blackberry Bold. The initial Bold 9000 had a screen resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, but had a bigger 2.6-inch screen. The display on the Bold 9780 is capable of displaying up to 65k colors and the screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Processor
The processors on all Blackberry Bold series have been the same all through, with each having the same 624 MHz clock speed. Be it the first Blackberry 9000 or the new 9780, all Blackberry Bold models use the same processor. Maybe RIM does not feel the need to upgrade the processor, even as competitors talk about upgrading their existing 1 GHz processors to dual-core processors.

RAM
RIM has increased the RAM for the new Blackberry Bold, to double. The new Bold 9780 has a 512MB RAM as against 256MB on the older 9700. With more RAM, you can definitely expect a smoother multitasking and overall operation.

Camera
The Bold 9780 has also bumped up the mega pixel count on the camera to 5MP from 3.15MP on the Bold 9700. The 5MP camera comes with auto-focus, LED flash, image stabilzation, scene modes and video recording.

OS
Apart from a few hardware upgrades, the biggest change and most-anticipated upgrade is the new OS, the Blackberry 6 which comes with the Webkit browser. The whole new interface has a new homescreen, icons and features like multiple views based on content type, etc. This will be what really sets the new Bold 9780 apart from the old models. Although the new Blackberry 6 supports multitouch, it won't be that useful on this non-touchscreen Bold 9780.

Connectivity
Nothing groundbreaking here with no new connectivity options, compared to existing connectivity support on the older models. The new Bold 9780 supports Wi-Fi (b/g), 3G with HSDPA and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP connectivity. There is also a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support.

Multimedia
The new Bold can play DivX and XviD video surprisingly, and it will play most standard audio formats like MP3, WMA and AAC+.

Price
The new Bold 9780 is available for Rs. 26,900 and the old 9700 is available online for Rs. 24,213 from Univercell.com.
With all these new features and most importantly the new OS, the new Bold 9780 is an attractive smartphone to compete against the non-touchscreen business smartphones from Nokia.
