Default Harsh realities shows

With channels competing with each other for viewership, the more shocking, scandalous and gritty the material, the more likely they are to attract audiences. The recent crop of realities over the past few years reveals that vulgarity and a freewheeling, explicit-hurling tongue is all one needs to secure their fifteen minutes of fame on television.

Dadagiri on Real tops the list of shows packed with offensive content. The show was splashed all over the news and clips were circulated on the internet when 19-year-old contestant Ravi Bhatia slapped host Esha. After a heated argument, hard case Esha slapped Ravi. What she, and audiences all over, did not expect was to be slapped back! That’s exactly what followed and the ‘How can she slap?’ video got more publicity than Esha or Ravi could have ever managed on their own.

And what could be real than 14 celebs and non-celebs battling it out to stay a whole 14 weeks in the same house. Bigg Boss, always guaranteed to produce cringe-curiosity, became synonymous with vile language and explosive situations.

One such incident took place when Sambhavna Seth accused co-participant Ashutosh Kaushik, winner of MTV Roadies show, of hurting her right breast while playing a game of kabaddi. This ignited a massive fight. Though the rest of the house members tried to keep the situation under control, it turned worse when Raja Chaudhary intervened and called her a ‘nautanki’ (melodrama queen). This, added with Raja’s constant abuses, made sure that Bigg Boss waved goodbye to its ‘family show’ status.

Another show high on adult content is MTV’s Roadies, which has enjoyed a cult following ever since it started in 2003. However, the latest season is even more offensive than usual. It’s been in the news and criticised for its foul languages, bad influence on young minds and outrageous tasks.

Ditto goes for Splitsvilla, which is not only demeaning to contestants; it’s also filled with obscenities, cat fights and *****iness.

If *** sells in Bollywood films, it looks like television shows need the help of expletives, backbiting and offensive raunchiness to get a firm hold on audiences.
