Natural Colors for Holi: 5 Natural, Skin-Friendly Colors You Can Make At Home For Holi

Holi is just around the corner and although we are excited about the festival, there is also the concern skin issues caused by artificial colors, which contains chemicals. It is a known fact that these colors can cause allergies, skin irritation and dryness. People use these colors as they are available in every store and are cheap. Also, people are not aware of any natural alternative. So, we have compiled a list of DIY natural colors that are easy to make. You can use these eco-friendly colors this Holi instead of the chemical colors. Read on to know how to make natural colors. For pink color


Beetroot powder
You can make both dry and wet pink or magenta color by using beetroots.

For dry pink color:
Take beetroots and grind it. Now, spread the beetroot paste on a tray and keep it under the sun to dry. Once it is dried, mix it with besan or gram flour.

For wet pink color:
Cut beetroot into small pieces and boil it in a cup of water to make concentrated pink color. You can use it by diluting it with water.

For yellow color


Turmeric
Yellow is one of the brightest color used during Holi and you can make it at home by using a few kitchen ingredients.

For dry yellow color:
Take two teaspoons of turmeric powder and four teaspoons of besan or gram flour. Make sure you keep the ration 1:2 for turmeric and besan. Mix it well and use it as dry yellow color. You can also use kasturi turmeric powder instead of cooking turmeric as kasturi turmeric is more fragrant and has several beauty benefits. Instead of besan, you can also use arrowroot powder, rice flour or multani mitti of fuller’s earth.

For wet yellow color:
For wet color, you can mix turmeric powder in the water. Another method is to boil marigold flower in water and leave it overnight.

For red color


Dried rose petals
You can use red rose or hibiscus flower to make red color.

For dry red color:
Take petals of red rose or hibiscus and dry it under the sun till it becomes crisp. Then, crush the dried petals using a mixer. You can also add flour to increase the quantity. Another alternative is red sandalwood powder but it can be bit expensive. You can also use vermillion powder but make sure it is natural vermillion or sindoor.

For wet red color:
Soak red hibiscus flower in water overnight and use this red color water the next day to fill up the balloons.

For green color


Henna powder
You can use good-quality henna powder for green color. The dry, powdered henna will not leave color and you can brush it off easily. It will only leave color if it is mixed with water.

For dry green color:
Take the henna powder and mix it with an equal quantity of besan or gram flour. Make sure the henna powder is of good quality and is not mixed with amla powder.

For wet green color:
You can crush mint leaves and mix the paste with water to make wet green color. You can also use leaves of fenugreek seeds or spinach to make the color.

Using food colors


You can make dry Holi colors by using food colors. All you have to do is mix food color to rice flour and add a little water to make a thick paste. Dry this paste and then grind it using a mixer to form the powder. You can use different food colors to make Holi colors.

These natural colors will be easy on your skin and will make Holi more enjoyable.
