Default 112 overseas players sign up for IPL II auction

It's IPL all the way if one goes by the list of 112 overseas players who have evinced interest in being considered for the second IPL player auction slated to be held in Goa on 6 February.

Well, topping the list are the Ozzies with 27 candidates, and the big surprise is the 21 English players who have come forward to be auctioned. The previous IPL had just one cricketer from the UK.

According to the new guidelines set by the governing council for the DLF IPL 2009, each franchisee will have a maximum purse of US $ 2 million, less any amount spent on signing temporary replacements from last year, to sign on overseas players in this auction. The auction is slated to commence on 6 February.

It is quite likely that about two players per team, that is 16 players for eight teams, are likely to make it past the auctioneer's gavel from the 112.

Amongst all the players, Kevin Pietersen has the highest base price of US$1.3 million and it is quite likely that he could end up being the highest paid cricketer. This apart top talent such as Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood have made themselves available for a three week period for the next two years.

"The enthusiasm and interest displayed by players from all around the world to participate in the second season of the league has been truly overwhelming…which augurs well for development of world cricket," said IPL commissioner Lalit Modi. "We are extremely happy with the interest the league has garnered globally and look forward to the action at the second player auction in Goa."
