Default BEST OF 2017 - TOP 10 WOW TV Shows

#Bestof2017: 6 Shows that completely broke STEREOTYPES & wowed us!

We had run-off-the-mill shows, and then came these...

Last year spawned the beginning of a revolution on Indian television where we saw several shows combating norms coming on-air and even excelling.

This year too witnessed shows with concepts several people termed as 'risky', 'too bold' and what not. However, they created a wave before they went on-air and excelled.

Unfortunately, not all the shows from the list below lasted long enough, but we saw a revolution brought even in the most little of participation and they served their purpose.

Dhhai Kilo Prem

When was the last time you saw an overweight young girl and an equally overweight young boy being on-screen not as the sidekicks, but as the protagonists? Not before Star Plus introduced us to Dhhai Kilo Prem. With Anjali Anand making her debut and Meherzan Mazda doing his first lead role, the show created a stir with its concept about the lives of two obese people having dreams with sky as the limit. The show may have gone off-air sooner than anticipated, but it will certainly be remembered for several years to come.

Sethji

The show may not have had the most successful run, but when the base concept of the same was introduced to the audience, I as a viewer was already looking forward to it. The idea of having contrasting interests where a village which is deprived of even basic urban development like concrete roads, electricity or other comfort utilities is ruled by the matriarch Sethji (Gurdeep Kohli). Things gradually change with the entry of Pragati (Rumman Ahmed) and thus begins the journey.

Ikyawann

Amongst the latest on the block, the first week of the show will certainly be replayed for many who wants to know about Indian television in the future. With the fantastic concept about how the 51st child of a family is born and is the first girl followed by her upbringing done only by the men of the house was a concept no one would have thought to be put on-air. Dialogues mouthed by Susheel's (Prachi Tehlan) father about society's beliefs and approach towards girls would have certainly given you goosebumps.

Meri Durga

Another show about a girl child began right back in January 2017, with the idea of how a father is doing everything in his ability to educate his daughter in spite of not having the financial liberty to do so. However, the little one is actually not too interested in studying and her curiosity lies elsewhere. The show may have gone run-off-the-mill with the leap being introduced only recently, but the first six months were full of moments that broke several unquestioned beliefs.

Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara

You may have loved Cheeni Kum and not liked Nishabd, but to see the concept of an elderly man falling in love with a young girl and vice versa was not something one anticipated would air on Indian TV anytime soon. Sanjay Kapoor's TV debut has turned out to be a brilliant one and apart from his on-screen chemistry with Smriti Kalra, the show has the most beautiful moments of innocent and true romance along with challenging questions asked.

Ishq Mein Marjawan

Colors' Ishq Mein Marjawan has continued the legacy of Beyhadh in a way that it poses both the male and female protagonists of the show as grey characters. And in fact, thanks to being on-air on a channel like Colors, a dark concept like this has managed to sustain itself in the rating charts too. ******s, mysteries, betrayals etc., is followed by Aalisha Panwar and Arjun Bijlani's amazing on-screen chemistry, thus breaking the stereotype of how the male and female leads do not necessarily have to be goody-goody.

We did have some other names that we thought of including in the list, but they do not make the cut as the above ones did question many people's minds in a manner where the viewer was either appalled by the boldness of the concept or awed by the fact that such an idea has in fact been introduced on Indian TV.

Which show has been your favourite? Leave in your comments below..
