New Delhi: Adding another feather to its cap, Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp completed 10 years on Tuesday. To celebrate the milestone achievement, WhatsApp on Monday via blog post celebrated its 10th anniversary by looking back at its decade long journey.

Here is a timeline on WhatsApp’s 10-year-long journey:

2009: Messaging service WhatsApp was initially launched for iPhone and Android users. By the end of 2009, new features were introduced and users could share photos and videos on the messaging app.

2010: A new feature was introduced to share Location on the app. The location sharing feature enabled thousands of users to share their current location with other users. This feature was used by some to let their family members and friends know that they are safe.

2013: During this year, WhatsApp group chat was introduced in the app. To enable this setting, open ‘Group Info.’ Now, under the Group Settings, select Send Messages and then click on ‘Only Admins’.

2014: During the month of April, WhatsApp achieved its first milestone by raking in 500 million users. Meanwhile, WhatsApp joined Facebook this year. Besides, the concept of ‘Read receipts’and the Blue ticks feature was also brought into the app.

2015: The WhatsApp Web for desktop users was rolled out for users in the month of January 2015.

2016: Gaining 1 billion users every month, WhatsApp introduced the end-to-end encryption for a safer messaging experience. In May 2016, a desktop version of the app was launched. By the end of the year, the video calling feature was rolled out for both iOS and Android phone users.

The feature allows the users to make a video call that supports a total of four participants, stated a report.

2017: During this year, the number of users was growing at a rate of 1 billion every day. The WhatsApp status was introduced during this year making the app very entertaining.

2018: In January 2018, WhatsApp had a 1.5 billion strong family. Some of the achievements of this year include WhatsApp Business app, WhatsApp Group calling and WhatsApp stickers.

2019: WhatsApp turns 10 years this year.
Whatsapp users can now file a complaint with the Department of Telecom (DoT) against offensive messages. All the person needs to do is provide a screenshot of the message along with the phone number of the accused, via email at ccaddn-dot@nic.in. This move by the messaging platform comes in the wake of many public figures, including journalists, complaining of receiving abusive and threatening messages.
