Ramadan 2019: Kerala to Begin Fasting Ahead of Rest of India, Moon Not Sighted in Other Parts of Country Moon sighting 2019 (File Photo) Muslims in Kerala to begin the Ramadan 2019 fasting from May 6 (Monday). The South Indian state, with nearly one-third of the Muslim population, usually celebrates Ramzan and Eid, a day before the rest of India. ANI tweeted that month of Ramzan will be observed from May 6 (Monday) in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka. District Qazi Twaka Ahmad Musliyar announced the sighting of moon at Kappad Beach in Kozhikode (Kerala) on Sunday evening.
However, Imarat e Sharia, Delhi said in a statement, “A meeting of Moon Sighting Committee Imarate Shariah, Jamiat Ulema was held today after Maghrib prayers. Maulana Yusuf Khan Qasmi presided the meet. He announced that there is no report of moon sighting today in Delhi or other parts of India.”
This year too, the tentative dates for the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the onset of Ramadan, is under question. With the month of Shabaan, the month that precedes Ramadan in Islamic lunar calendar draws to a close, Muslims in India have begun preparations to beat the heat as they fast from dawn to dusk for a period of 29 or 30 days.
According to Muslim beliefs, it was during Ramadan, precisely on the night of Laylat al-Qadr that the Quran was first revealed to mankind. The Night of Power or Laylat al-Qadr as it is called, was the night when the word of Allah is said to have been revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
Ramadan or Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and join mass prayers at mosques. Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramzan. This annual observance is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam.
