Default Top 10 Bollywood songs of 2009

Here's what you hummed all-year-long till your friends asked you to SHUT-UP!

1. Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire
Singer
: Sukhwinder Singh (also features vocals by Mahalakshmi Iyer, Tanvi Shah and Vijay Prakash)

Why it rocked 2009: Subhash Ghai must have plucked the remaining of his hair out with his own bare hands for letting this terrific track from Yuvvraaj to be handed over to Slumdog Millionaire after he felt that it didn't suit the mood of his film. This out-and-out dance number by AR Rahman has a trans-genre feel in the arrangements which made the song one heck of a chartbuster - both nationally and internationally.

What’s more this song which almost became like a national anthem earned us an OSCAR! Jai Ho Rahman!

2. Masakali from Delhi 6
Singer
: Mohit Chauhan

Why it rocked 2009: The film brutally tanked at the box office but the music was lauded nonetheless. It seems that Prasoon Joshi has his own version of the dictionary because he continues to introduce hatke words from his innovative lexicon like Masakali. The song was such a hit that whenever someone heard the song on the radio or the iPod, he/she would break into an Egyptian walk [a la Abhishek Bachchan] letting the passerby know for sure which song that person is listening to!

3. Emotional Atyachar from Dev D
Singer:
BandMaster Rangeela and Rasila (Brass version) Biny Chakravarty (Rock Version)

Why it rocked 2009: Just like the movie, the song too created much hulla-gulla and rightly so. It became a hot phrase with youngsters who satirically used it with their boyfriends and girlfriends and also with their pocket-money-controlling parents. While the brass band version is one of the craziest songs of the decade, its rock version is no less zany.

4. Twist from Love Aaj Kal
Singer:
Neeraj Shridhar
Why it rocked 2009: We twist is undoubtedly the flagship number of Love Aaj Kal. It’s an instant foot-tapping number and the 'Naagin' tune adds one more cherry on the top of the cherry. The song being high on beats became a hot favourite not only with the DJ's but also with shaadi ka band-bajawalas.

5. Tera Hone Laga Hoon from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
Singer:
Atif Aslam, Alisha Chinoy
Why it rocked 2009: With Atif’s carefree voice and Alisha’s zingy vocal this Irshad Kamil’s song makes a perfect anecdote of a I-am-so-in-love situation. Its simple melody and clear-cut lyrics makes this song one of the best romantic numbers of this year.

6. Khudaya Khair from Billu aka Billu Barber
Singer:
Neeraj Shridhar , Soham
Why it rocked 2009: By now its obvious that most of the Pritam’s compositions carry a distinct tune which makes him identifiable in a minute. Nonetheless this song was quite a super-duper hit thanks to Gulzar's lyrics and Shah Rukh Khan of course. Everything else about the film this song was featured in, bombed.

7. Aa Dekhen Zara from Aa Dekhen Zara
Singer:
Neil Nitin Mukesh and Sunaina
Why it rocked 2009: On first thought everyone was like somebody please tell Neil that his father is a singer NOT him. But after the song came out, the same people were seen dancing on this number at nightclubs and discotheques. Gaurav Dasgupta gives the fast paced number a different spin altogether and an innovative one at that. Its one remix after Bachna Ae Haseeno that was acclaimed and appreciated.

8. Tum Mile from Tum Mile
Singer:
Neeraj Shridhar
Why it rocked 2009: An instant chartbuster from the word 'Go'. God only knows WHY Emraan Hashmi of all people is blessed with Midas Touch of this kind. Almost all his movies made ground-breaking revenue as far as music was concerned and Tum Mile was no exception. Pritam presents us with three different versions and all the three renditions are sincerely remarkable.

9. Dhan Te Naan from Kaminey
Singer:
Sukhwinder Singh, Vishal Dadlani

Why it rocked 2009: This is one number which in spite of being a little dilettantish went on to become one of the biggest hit of 2009. I mean c’mon who would have thought that Gulzar could write something like Aaja ki One Way Hai Yeh Zindagi ki Gali Ek hi Chance hai, Aage Hava hi Hava hai…Dhan te Naan! It’s the same raw lyrics coupled with Shahid Kapoor’s unrestrained attitude that made this song a knock-out!

10. Om Mangalam from Kambakht Ishq
Singer:
RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass) and Nindy Kaur
Why it rocked 2009: Kareena Kapoor in short white bridal dress asking Akshay Kumar to marry her made this video and the song an instantaneous hit. This one was one helluva lambi race ka ghoda as it stayed on chartbusters for weeks on end.
