The Kenyan athlete David Rudisha set a new world record in the 800m sprint in Germany. Rudisha stopped the clock at 1 minute, 41.09 seconds and beat the previous world record of 1 minute, 41.11 seconds held by his compatriot Wilson Kipketer. (Reuters)

Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie, the fastest marathoner, announced a shocking retirement after dropping out of the NYC Marathon because of a leg injury, only to change his mind later on.
