Hindu devotees bring home and also offer prayers in temporary temples built for idols of Lord Ganesha in order to invoke his blessings for wisdom and prosperity during the Ganesha Festival which culminates with the immersion of the idols in the Arabian Sea.

The idols are taken through the streets in a procession accompanied by dancing and singing, to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual send-off of his journey towards his abode in "Kailash", while taking away with him the misfortunes of all mankind.

Devotees carry an idol of Lord Ganesh, the deity of prosperity, to immerse it in the waters of the Arabian Sea on the last day of "Ganesh Chaturthi" in Mumbai. Idols of Ganesh are made two to three months before the day of "Ganesh Chaturthi". REUTERS
