1930 - call for civil disobedience
In 1930, the Congress adopted January 26 as "Purna Swaraj Day". This year also marked their nationwide call for civil disobedience. In 1934 Gandhi withdrew from the Congress. That same year the Congress Constitution was amended to make non-violence and khadi its fundamental creeds.

1938 - Subhash Chandra Bose elected Congress president
Subhash Chandra Bose was elected as Congress president in 1938. Differences arose in 1939 on whether Bose should have a second term. He resigned from the Congress presidency because of the lack of confidence he enjoyed amongst national leaders in 1939.

1942 - Quit India Movement
The Quit India Movement was a civil disobedience movement launched in India in August 1942 in response to Gandhi's call for immediate independence. The Partition of British India on the basis of religious demographics led to the creation, on 14 August 1947 and 15 August 1947, of the sovereign states of the Dominion of Pakistan and People's Republic of Bangladesh and the secular Union of India.

1975 - 1977 - The Emergency
The Emergency of 25 June 1975 %u2013 21 March 1977, was a 21-month period, when President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, upon advice by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, declared a state of emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution of India, bestowing on her the power to rule by decree, suspending elections and civil liberties. In the 1980s the Bofors scandal hit the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and several others were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for winning a bid to supply India's 155 mm field howitzer.

2004, 2009 elections
In 2004, Congress under the presidency of Sonia Gandhi led the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to victory in Elections defeating the BJP led NDA. It also won a landslide general election held in 2009. Gandhi is the longest serving President of the Congress party. She has served as the Chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha since 2004. In September 2010, on being re-elected for the fourth time, she became the longest serving president in the 126-year history of the Congress party.
