1885 - The beginning of an era On December 28, 1885, the Indian National Congress was founded at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Mumbai, with 72 delegates in attendance. British civil servant Allan Octavian Hume assumed office as the General Secretary and Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee of Kolkata was elected President. |

1892 - Dadabhai Naoroji in House of Commons Dadabhai Naoroji, considered by many as the eldest Indian statesman, contested successfully an election to the British House of Commons, becoming its first Indian member. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the British House of Commons between 1892 and 1895, and the first Asian to be a British MP. |

1906 - Tilak quits Congress The first cracks appear between the moderates and extremists and Bal Gangadhar Tilak and his supporters were forced to leave the party in 1906 due to difference of opinion. Tilak considered Swaraj as the natural and only solution in the abandonment of all things British. |
