Spl. Photos of Roger Federer's Life
Roger Federer's tennis odyssey
World number one Roger Federer seems to be living upto his billing as tournament favourite at the Australian Open, the year's first Grand Slam event. The Swiss tennis pro swept aside Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals to set up a title clash with Brit Andy Murray on Sunday. Federer, seeking his fourth Australian title, hopes to reverse his tear-filled exit from last year's final when he was beaten by Rafael Nadal for the left-handed Spaniard's first hard-court title. He was raised as a Catholic and met Pope Benedict XVI while playing the 2006 Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament in Rome. Like all male Swiss citizens, Federer was subject to compulsory military service in the Swiss Armed Forces. However, in 2003 he was deemed unfit due to a long-standing back problem and was subsequently not required to fulfill his obligations.
