Sales of smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system have overtaken Apple's iPhone in the US for the first time. Nielsen's figures show that Android's share of the smartphone market in the six months ending in August, jumped from 14 percent to 32 percent, while the iPhone dropped from 32 percent to 25 percent.

It is the surge of Android phones that is making the smartphone battle look like an one-sided contest. Every month dozens of new Android phones hit the market and here's our pick of the 10 best recent Android releases.

Motorola Droid Pro
The Droid has given the struggling Motorola a blockbuster it desperately needed. The last Motorola phone that caught everyone's imagination was the Razr, and that was years ago.
