While it is not to say that it doesn’t exist anymore, one can’t deny the major shift taking place. Today, filmmakers are ready to invest in a women-centric subject, even it means trusting the actress to shoulder the film single-handedly.

Actresses have moved on from remaining a mere prop and are now taking an equal, if not more, responsibility about the outcome. Rangasthalam, with two different teasers – one for the male lead and one for the female lead – is a testament to that. Bhaagamathie and Aramm featuring Anushka Shetty and Nayanthara respectively in the lead roles is another example. In this man-eat-man world that is the film industry, quite a few actresses have managed to stand tall and make their presence felt. Anushka Shetty – The Devasena of Tollywood tops the list. For a women-centric film, the actress charges Rs 4 crore while for any project she charges anywhere between Rs 2-2.5 crore. Her latest release, Bhaagamathie, opened to rave reviews.

Anushka was lauded for her versatile act as she stepped in and out of two characters with finesse and s****. The story, with the unexpected twist, was another surprise. The movie has managed to gross Rs 50 crore worldwide – a rare feat for a women-centric film down South! After delivering a powerful performance in Baahubali and a solo film like Bhaagaamthie thereafter, she has proved she is unstoppable.



Nayanthara – After being in the industry for 14 years, she remains the undisputed queen! The actress is one of the most sought-after actresses even today. For a women-centric film – she charges Rs 3 crore and for any other film she charges anywhere between Rs 1-1.5 crore. Her last two releases – Aramm – a film with her in the lead and Velaikkaran – a film opposite Siva Karthikeyan fared brilliantly. The first movie, especially, had critics and fans gushing about her dynamic act. She is one of those few actresses who has managed to keep a balance between commercial and content-driven films.



Samantha Ruth Prabhu – This actress, who people were almost going to write off just because she was tying the knot, is one of the top choices for filmmakers today! She charges anywhere between Rs 1- 1.25 crore. After being a part of two hit films – Raju Gari Gadhi 2 and Mersal, she has a string of films lined up – There’s Mahanati, Rangasthalam, Irumbu thirai, Super deluxe, SK12, U-turn Remake! Whoever said actresses don’t survive in the industry after marriage hasn’t checked out Samantha’s filmography!



Trisha – She has completed 15 years in the industry and is one of the most popular faces. She charges somewhere between Rs 95 -90 lakh. Hey Jude, her debut in Malayalam, recently hit theatres. She was praised for her wacky performance of Crystal in the film. She has several films coming up like ’96, Garjanai, 1818, Sathuranga Vettai 2.



Tamannaah Bhatia – Several doors opened for this promising actor after Baahubali. She charges somewhere between Rs 75 – 90 lakh per film. She was last seen in Sketch opposite Chiyaan Vikram. Her roles in films like Devi, Kanden Kadhalai garnered much acclaim. She has Queen Once again, Na Nuuve, Khamoshi coming up.



Kajal Aggarwal – She completed a decade in the industry last year. She is one of the most known actors down South. She was part of two big hits last year – Khaidi No 150 and Mersal. She charges somewhere between Rs 75 – 85 lakh. She has two films coming up in Tamil – Awe and Paris, Paris.
