Eid-e-Milad, a Muslim festival also known as Mawlid and Milad-Un Nabi is celebrated in most countries today. While it falls on December 1 in a lot of countries, in some places the day is celebrated on November 30. The changes in date are due to the lunar calendar it follows. In India, Mawlid will begin in the evening of December 1 end in the evening of December 2. The celebrations extend until December 2, 2017, as the moon has not been sighted. Karnataka and Telangana changed the date to December 2
due to the same reasons.

Eid-e-Milad, which is believed to be Prophet Muhammad’s birthday varies between the two branches of Islam-Sunnies and Shia Muslims. For Sunnis, the day is said to fall on the 12th day of the third month of the Islamic calendar called Rabi’ al-aawal. But Shias believe that Prophet Muhammad was actually born on the 17th day of the month.

Marking the occasion, Eid-e-Milad is celebrated in most Muslim countries with processions on streets and decorations on homes and mosques. While the day is widely celebrated in India and Pakistan, it is not celebrated in Saudi Arabia or Qatar.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed the festival saying, “A few days from now, the pious occasion of Id-e-Milad-un-Nabi will be observed.” Today, Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Meh****a Mufti greeted the people of the state. According to Geo TV, in Pakistan, the day started with 31- and 21-gun salute in the federal and provincial capitals. Numerous processions, fireworks and celebrations will mark the birth of Prophet Mohammad in the country.
